***** FamilySearch Technical Support Needed *****

1/22/22 update

This is an attempt to provide additional information on the print problem I am having on FamilySearch. My original message is at the end.   For some time, I have been saving a census full-page image and its citation and index information to a PDF file using the PRINT button on the top right of the FS screen. This function worked well in the past but is no longer working correctly as explained below.  I use the Microsoft-to-PDF pseudo print device to do this (I have tried other PDF print drivers and get the same results). I get the same results on a W10 PC and a W11 PC using the Edge (Chromium) browser.

The problem is that the image (let's say a full-page image of a census page) does not print out or if it does print out it is masked off. The print problem occurs about 95% of time I try it.

Here's a link to a FS page that has the type of information that I want to capture with the print button.

United States Census, 1850; https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-XXZS-PTB?cc=1401638&wc=95RK-3TB%3A1031318301%2C1031721501%2C1031721502

There are 3 files attached that show the results of my print attempts.

  1. Bad print image - image is partially present but is mostly masked out.
  2. Bad print image - image is completely masked out.
  3. Missing image - citation is present (normally follows image)
Print test result bad image 1a_1.jpg
Print test result bad image 1b_1.jpg
Print test result no image 2_1.jpg

Please note that the citation and index info always print out correctly (they may not be visible in the above images). I did not adjust the image in any way. I did the print on the page as it was initially displayed. But note that adjusting the size of the full-page image doesn't seem to make any difference to the issue.

The bad prints can be put in to two categories. 1). The image is missing. The citation and index information print out. 2). The image is present but is completely or partially masked --- it's like the background is printing out on top of the image (or in other words, the image is being pushed behind the background). Citation and index info are OK.

I should note that I want to always print out a full-page image --- but if I zoom in on the image so that only a section of it is displayed, it usually always prints out correctly.

I hope this helps.  I'd be happy to provide any additional information that I can.

Thank you, Frank

My original message text is shown below.

When trying to print a complete census page image using the on screen PRINT button it does not work about 95% of the time. I'm printing to a Microsoft-to-PDF device, but I believe the results are the same if I print to an actual printer. I've tried to print on two PCs and gotten the same results. The result I'm looking for is a PDF doc with the full-size image, its citation, and the index information. This printing process has worked well in past but has become unreliable recently. Instead of getting the desired doc, I get either the citation and index info only (no image) OR I get the complete doc, but the image is masked out (it looks like the screen background is on top and image is below it). I want to capture the image as a full-size image, but if I zoom in to a section of the image, the print process usually works fine. I tried zooming in and out of the full image, but haven't found any setting where the print function works reliably. I've tried 3 different PDF print devices --- all give the same results. Any solution or workaround will be appreciated. Thank you.

Both PCs are running W10 and the browser is Microsoft Edge (Chromium) --- both with latest updates.

    Hello @FMB114

Regarding the printing problem -- have you tried just doing a screenshot?

    Snipping Tool

Snipping Tool is a Microsoft Windows screenshot utility included in Windows Vista and later. It can take still screenshots of an open window, rectangular areas, a free-form area, or the entire screen. Snips can then be annotated using a mouse or a tablet, stored as an image file or an MHTML file, or e-mailed.

    Hoping this is helpful.

I am wondering WHY I am not able to print a full page on my searches?? I had no problem with this last week and now only a portion of the page is printable. It shows the scroll lines on the side & bottom of the screen. What's up with that?

I have the same problem as Arlene Grimm. On a census record, I would like to print the full list of people in the family and can't.

And to the original post about doing screen shots, that is both a work-around and often less than satisfactory. It might work for a census image but would not contain the citation, and for the FS record of that census, which often runs longer than one page, it is tedious and time-consuming.

I don't print much on paper these days, but when I do, I find that the results are better if I download the record to my computer first and then print. That method gives me more options to resize the page if needed.
