New and Better Standards

The standards have to be overhauled. I am so tired of others coming along, and changing an ancestor's name, using antiquated letters, or using the original Latin, of the church record. This is not the Vatican City! If I were to follow this formula, my maternal grandfather would have to be entered "Joannem Eugenium". I will not refer to my grandfather, in this manner. He was "Eugene J.," and that is how he referred to himself throughout his life.

    @Joe Lofaro

    Joe

    Welcome to the "Community.FamilySearch" Forum.

    I am just another 'lowly' User/Patron ...

I, 'hear'; and, totally understand, what you are saying ...

    You are not alone ...

Most of us have ... been there ... done that ... and, still do.

    But ...

    That Said ...

    Unfortunately ...

Basically, what you describe, is part of the 'pros and cons', with working in, the whole 'nature' and 'premise', of "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'.

Deep down, we are ALL "Related" ...

There are MANY; Many; many, Users/Patrons, ALL working on the SAME "Ancestral" Lines ...

"Family Tree", of 'FamilySearch', is NOT, Your "Tree"; or, My "Tree", it is Our "Tree", one SINGLE "Tree" ...

    Now ...

    That Said ...

Here an old 'standby' of mine, that I have previously proffered on occasion ...

    ------------------

Most new (and, some old) Users/Patrons DO NOT understand the basic 'nature' and 'premise' of "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch', when they join in.

    Please let me explain ...

We do not have our OWN "Tree" in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'.

We ONLY have "Branches" (ie. Ancestral" lines), that are interconnected, in this SINGLE "One" World "Tree", for all of us, that is "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'.

"Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch' is NOT like 'On-Line' "Websites" (eg. "Ancestry_com"; or "MyHeritage_com"; or, the like); and/or, 'standalone' personal (computer) programmes (eg, the OLD, now no longer supported, "PAF"; or, "Ancestral Quest"; or, the like).

We DO NOT have "Private"/"Personal" 'Trees' in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch' like other 'On-Line' "Websites"; and/or, 'standalone' personal (computer) programmes.

We do not even, own; or, manage; and, are NOT even responsible for, the "Deceased" individuals/persons in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'.

    And, most importantly ...

We DO NOT even, own; or, manage; and, are NOT even responsible for, Our OWN "Deceased" Ancestors/Family/Relatives in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'.

"Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch' is built on a "Open Edit" Platform - hence, why any registered User/Patron can "Edit" (ie. Add, Delete; and/or, Change) ANY "Deceased" individual/person in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'.

    ------------------

    Hence ...

    That is why ...

    [ 1 ]

All that one can really do, is 'Monitor', our "Ancestral" Lines, for 'wayward' CHANGES, by OTHER Users/Patrons.

    Nothing more, nothing less ...

    We ALL make MISTAKES ...

NONE of us are Perfect ...

    As an aside ...

IF, you were not already aware; THEN, ...

In "Family Tree" of "FamilySearch' ...

We have the ability to "Watch" (Oops, sorry, 'old school', "Follow"), up to a MAXIMUM of x4000 individuals/persons, at any given time

    Basically ...

It is a matter of "Following" our MOST important Ancestors.

Just to keep on top of any 'wayward' CHANGES.

I check, the "Changes" to those that I "Follow", on a "Daily" Basis; so that, I can keep on top of things.

More often that not, nothing needs to be done; but, at least, I have the opportunity, to be abreast of things; as, they happen/transpire/unfold.

    AND ...

    [ 2 ]

MANY; Many; many, Users/Patrons, of "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch', STILL maintain, their OWN Personal (and, often, PRIVATE) "Copy", of their "Ancestral" Lines, in the various OTHER, 'On-Line' Websites; and/or, in the many 'Standalone' Databases.

    As such ...

Unfortunately, I very much doubt, that the basic 'nature' and 'premise', of "Family Tree", of 'FamilySearch', will be changing, anytime soon.

I know that this does not help; but, I hope that this gives you some more, insight; and, perspective.

    Brett

ps: And, 'Question': WHOSE "Standards", Yours; Mine; someone else's ... where do we 'draw the line'

eg. REGISTED / RECORDED "Birth" Name ... or ... HOW they REFERRED to themselves throughout their life ...

That is the "Dilemma" ... WHOSE "Standard" ...

    .

It would be extremely helpful if the webmaster would simply post a list of some basic standards. For example, did "British Colonial America" become "United States" in July 1776? I have seen some "official" changes from "BCA" to "US" prior to the signing of the Declaration of Independence. I hate the popup that says "county did not exist on that date" then the county list pops up, but there are no options given.

@Rickard LSawyer where do you see a popup that says "county did not exist on that date"?
