Duplicates
Hi, I've have in my tree Maddern HUGH M4GX-W6Y and his wife Mary COLLETT M4GX-WXC and their dau Mary HUGH/ES G7XM-1XY. The HUGHES is what I find on her marriage Parish entry.
Of interest
I believe I have been following 6 issue of Maddern HUGH 1. James M4CZ-37P; 2. Thomas; 3. Mary as above. 4. Margaret; 5. Elizabeth; 6. Anne (I've not researched all the F.S. numbers BUT what I have found is
SIX numbers for Maddern as per this page as well as M4GX-W6Y
I'm unsure as to how to proceed and request your suggestions, when there are duplicates (of late I've been finding a few esp on my tree) what is the procedure?
If 'us' as in those who are searching and find duplicates are the only ones to remove them, I feel I need your okay.
Looking forward to your reply

If you come across a name that most likely is a duplicate, you select the red explanation point and review the merge. If the information on one name has more then the other and it looks close correct with the family then you merge the information to one of the names and save it. It will update the name on Family Search and show wether or not their Temple work is complete.
I hope this helped.

Hello @RosanneWills
Further to what has been offered I would like to reassure you that since Family Tree is an open-edit, collaborative, single tree, you are free to make any changes you need to make in the branches of the tree you are working on. Merging duplicates is a very important process in the effort to make the tree as accurate as possible. There are some great tips about merging in this blog article:
Here is a paragraph from the above article that explains why merging is important:
- Keep in mind why merging is important. Merging is important for a variety of different reasons. One of the most important reasons is to ensure accuracy in family history research. Getting rid of a duplicate person means that people will not be building family lines off of two versions of the same person. Merging duplicates also means that the sources and information found on both entries are combined to one entry. This combination of sources and information helps to ensure that the entry for the individual is the most complete and accurate it can be.
Best wishes!
