The Family Tree on FamilySearch is communal: it's all one tree that anyone can see and edit (after logging in). The only parts that aren't visible to everyone are profiles that are marked as living; those can only be seen (and therefore edited) by the person who created them.
You can search for deceased people by names, dates, and relationships using either "Find" in the Family Tree menu or "Family Tree" in the Search menu. (Both go to the same search form.) If that doesn't turn up the family you're looking for, ask the person who sent you the message to tell you the person/profile identifier (PID) for one or more of the family's members, and then paste it into the box at the top of the Recents menu (visible when you're on any page or view within Family Tree) to go to that profile. PIDs have the form CCCC-CCC, where each C is an alphanumeric character (letter or number); they're randomly assigned by the system when the profile is created.
