Name male or female

I recently attached a death record for which there is no image. The name as indexed is one I am not familiar with. Sex is unknown.

Name: Epiedel. Death is 1923 in Zell im Wiesental, Baden. Birth 1895. Is this a legitimate German name?

I'm at a disadvantage not being able to see the entry. Individual letters in a name are often misread. Any ideas?

    Hello Joyce Welch

    Thank you for your inquiry on Epiedel. I also cannot see anything to indicate sex. I googled the name Epiedel and got nothing. Ancestry had nothing. I cannot see anything more to do except wait for more documentation to come to light. You could try a concerted search in many of the genealogical entities out there, such as Rootsweb, Cyndi's List, perhaps a library that specializes in German research or a German genealogical club. Perhaps you could research the father in the hopes of finding an obituary that could possibly give more information on the child. I do wish you the best.

    I found Epiedel Attinger in FT: G8GT-XJS. Just based on the phonemes, Epiedel is almost certainly a woman. Standardizing dates and places may get you some fresh record hints that will answer the question.

    (Something is wrong with Search; I am unable to find any historical record of this name but I see the historical record attached to G8GT-XJS.)

    @Joyce Welch

    Hello, thank you for contacting FamilySearch support with your question about the unusual name you have found.

    These kinds of names, especially when all that you have found to date is an index, can be very difficult, but the suggestions above are all good. One thing you could try, as a previous responder mentioned, try joining a German genealogy group or even use the WIKI in FamilySearch to connect with others pursuing the same area of interest. The following is a link to an article that can assist you with joining a group here in Community.

    Here at FamilySearch - I think you will get best results asking your question to the Germany group.

    From what I could tell Epiedel is a legitimate name but could not determine if there is an implied sex.

    The records that used to be here at FamilySearch: Lutherische Kirchenbücher, 1502-1985

    appear to no longer be in the Catalog?
