Why can't I search this database anymore?
I am just another 'lowly' User/Patron ...
'Yes', you are correct, when one searches a "Collection", in 'FamilySearch', one is now presented with a NEW "Results" page/screen.
And, MANY; Many; many, Users/Patrons are NOT happy with that NEW "Results" screen/page ...
That Said ...
When I access, the "Collection", in 'FamilySearch', being the "United States Civil War Soldiers Index, 1861-1865":
As you suggest, I had no problems/issues with accessing the "Collection"; and, the "Index"; and, there are results (ie. "Records") for my searches ...
(1) I am presented with the NEW "Results" page/screen; and,
(2) As, I indicated there are "People" listed;
(3) There are NO "Images" associated with ANY of the "Records", ONLY an index.
I have never accessed that "Collection" previously ...
IF, you were previously able to also BOTH, 'see'; and, 'access', "Images" associated with those "Records" (ie. indexes); THEN, perhaps, the "Contractual Arrangement/Agreement" between, the "Record Custodian"; and, 'FamilySearch', has CHANGED (ie. been updated); and, due to NEW "Restrictions", 'FamilySearch' is NO LONGER able to provide access to any "Images" associated" with that "Collection".
That "Collection" (ie. Index) was a joint project of, the U.S. National Park Service; the Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS); and, the Genealogical Society of Utah (GSU) - [the "Church", now 'FamilySearch'].
"Contractual Arrangements/Agreements" between, 'FamilySearch'; and, the various "Record Custodians" CONTINUALLY "Change" (and, not always for the better).
Just though that I would add this to the mix.
When we searched for that database it was accessible. We would recommend that you do some browser maintenance to clear cookies and temp files. Go to Help (circle with ?) and enter Cookies then follow the instructions in https://www.familysearch.org/help/helpcenter/article/how-do-i-delete-cookies-from-familysearch

I'm sorry for not making myself clear, my bad. True, the database is accessible. I have in the past, searched for and located the actual record image. I can no longer do that. What changed and why? I preferred the old way. Took some time, but I had the actual record.

Whenever possible FamilySearch makes images and indexes available for all users. However, rights to view these data are limited by contract and subject to change. Because of this there may be limitations on where and how images and indexes are available or who can see them. Please be aware some collections consist only of partial information indexed from the records and do not contain any images. For additional information about image restrictions see Restrictions for Viewing Images in FamilySearch Historical Record Collections.
As per the above extractions from the wiki it appears that the contract between the National Archives and us has changed. However, you may contact the National Archives as outlined in the wiki article for copies.
