How do I unmerge someone that has merge my ancestor into a tree who just seems to have found the best-fit person? I have messaged them and asked for the source of information for the merge as they seem to have merged my Louisa Selzer into their Lucy Selzer who married a Matthew Barron whereas mine Louisa married a Barrand and then added parents and siblings for her. They are either ignoring me or haven't picked up the message as of yet. I have always message before doing any merging and held off from merging when asked to and without knowing if these are for sure the same person it feels like it's corrupting my tree. I know dramatic but that's how it feels to me. I don't mind sharing information or documents or my research that's why my tree is here on this site and open.
I would like to unmerge mine from theirs until I have more proof they are the same person but I can't there is no option to unmerge on the merge, I don't want to delete it as this will affect other trees and I will end up with a duplicate. I just wished they messaged me beforehand. The other person is also just updating the documents many i had already found and added to mine, just saying 'same person' or ' the same person without saying why they are the same person or leaving any of my previous comments with a reason why for change but making it their change. Now, these could be the right ones but without more information via documents I have no idea. I do not have the time right now to go through with a fine comb as I personally do not add anything to my tree until I can say without a doubt it is them
There should be a button you both have to press before a merge so you can double-check and confirm not just have 2 people with similar names merged with no proper exclamation other than 'same person'.
Go to the change log, if nothing has been added or changed you can unmerge 2 people. If any sources or data has changed you cannot unmerge but you can use that change log to restore the person who was eliminated in the merge. Restore that person and then check to make sure any vital details and sources are attached to the correct individuals. Add good notes, and make sure you refresh each persons's page and that there is not a suggested duplicate which I often see. If you see that dismiss it so it does not happen quickly again.1
Thank you for the reply.
After the merge, the other user has added things so I cant unmerge and I can not restore the other person for some reason maybe because I did not do the merge and they have deleted them?
I do tend to dismiss anything like possible missing marriage or children if I am positive if there is none and there was no suggested duplicate last time I logged on, which was just over a week ago when I found a new document with my Louisa's maiden name attached. it was one of the 1st things I checked when I found out the maiden name.
This tree the other person that's now been merged into mine was done a few days ago, everything in it is dated 28th September, I noticed on the 1st before bed, sent a message and left for a few days, no reply.
So yesterday I tried to unmerge Lucy and Louisa and restore the Lucy Selzer of the other person that they merged into my Lousia Barrand and couldn't due to other contributors. So added notes to the merged ancestor, so those who are following the tree and adding to this branch know to be careful with anything added after Louisa and removed the name Lucy from her name as there is no record at all of Lucy being part of her name. The thing is I had looked at the parents that now have been connected last time I had time research and made a note to myself to find more information as there seem to be family names in it but no Louisa Margaret Johanna that I could find.
It looks like I will have to keep until I can fully determine that there is or is not a true connection as the other person is not answering private messages, even tho it is niggling away at me.
It's just annoying merge is so easy to do and after someone has spent a lot of time on a tree and has built it they didn't have the decency to ask and converse beforehand. I believe we should share and not keep our research to ourselves as we could miss out on so much more its one reason I have my tree across various sites so we all can help each other. I would have helped to determine if they were the same and not dismissed a possibility as others have done to me.0
I have managed to reinstate my own Louisa, lucky I was following as there are two other distant families contributing to her, so when I made a note yesterday after the merge I was notified and then could see she deleted the Lucy Selzer merged her into a new Louisa and then merged my Louisa into the Louisa that was lucy.
I was then able to notice the father Selzer has 2 Louisa daughters, so I was able to remove one and then I removed the father I just have as a surname. I was then able to dismiss the duplicate as you said Cindy and put a note on if there is proof they are the same person, contact me. I also sent another personal message to the person stating I am willing to work together to find out for sure if they are the same, and if we are can remerge.
It just seems that copied all my research across various sites to fit theirs right down to my mother and father through 4 generations, they must have been up for over 24 hours checking all the information.
Thanks for your help,1
You can learn alot from the change logs and that is where I look first when changes are made. Glad you could fix some of it and leaving notes behind help as well. Not everyone is good about messaging back.0
For what it is worth, I sometimes detangle confused families by first merging what seems to be the keystone persons with similar names. Once the merger is complete and all sources are attached I may be able to see who is who, and separate them out.
Perhaps that approach would work with this Louisa and Lucy.0
Thanks, It got messier, When I refreshed the children of Louisa and Matthew was all messed about with too. So I just unlinked the double copy of the children from Matthew and put contact me as the reason why. I got fed up with detailed explanations by this time. I am scared to check again today that's there are more doubles of people in my tree caused by the strange merging. I will check over the weekend.
There were no Sources other than mine copied over to the new Louisa formerly Lucy that my Louisa was merged into, not all sources were copied over either. There were no sources from the parents of Lucy as in the birth records attached, some of the trees before it was merged with mine only had one source and the rest none. They could hold some records and have not uploaded them yet but without communication between us, I have no idea as there was none there.
There does need to be I think an agreement for a merge especially if they going to merge into theirs and remove or dismiss some of the sources and notes made.
Thank you both for your insights and input.1
