Entering year 2 or 4 digits
Canada, Ontario—Tax Assessment Records, 1834–1899 [Part C][M3ZY-XRM]
The year 189_ is obvious. The last number is not. Nor do other numbers on the page even give me a hint by virtue of style of writing each number
The instructions allow for entry of 2 or 4 digits, I'd like to do three but that is a not accepted.
Do I therefore just put in "18"? I'd like to add more but not looking like I can

It could be an elongated and squished 8. Check the adjacent/ reference images to see if it is clearer on those. Click on the last (4th) vertical icon to show or hide the reference images.
Unfortunately, when viewing a Shared Batch I cannot see the reference images (I ask again - why not???). This case is a perfect reason why a potential "helper" needs to see the reference images.

Be sure to check the reference images, like the above said. However, if you really cant figure it out, as a last resort, just do 189? and submit and let a reviewer take it. They can usually figure it out.

I don't think I recall a numeric field that accepted a question mark (?). I hope this one does.

Thanks for your help. To my pleasant surprise a numeric number field will accept a "?". So I entered 189? and it was accepted.
The "shape" on the document for the last number bears absolutely no relationship to every other 0-9 digit that is on the page. I wish the review good luck with this one.

Let me research this! It will just take a few minutes!

It is 1897. The reference image +1 shows it more clearly.
"You can view multiple images while you index. The additional images are reference images and can help you with your work. This feature is essential if you are indexing a record that continues from one image to the next, or if you are struggling to read difficult handwriting.
Steps
- Click the 4th icon in the small, vertical toolbar to the left of the screen.
- You can also click Data Entry in the top menu, and then click Show Reference Images.
- The reference image opens on the right side of the image area. Click the thumbnail of the image you want to view.
- Adjust the size and contrast of the reference image to find the information you need.
- You can continue indexing while viewing both images at the same time."

@annewandering I hope that I can once again always see reference images while viewing a Shared Batch. I'm not sure, but I think that sometimes I can see them and sometimes not. This was a perfect example of why anyone trying to help needs to see the reference images.
