Why is my ancestor's record read only?
I had two ancestors in Zion's Camp. The one ancestor was Lyman Smith LZ2W-LJY. There is a short biography in a family book that was published in 1990. It would be great if that information was included on his memories page. He was installed as a member of the first Quorum of the 70 and later died at an early age in Nauvoo. He was a second cousin to George A. Smith and served a short mission with him. Is there any way I could get some more information on him on family search?

Welcome to the "community.FamilySearch" Forum.
I am just another 'lowly' User/Patron ...
[ And, I happen to be a Member of the Church ... ]
Your Questions:
(1) Why is my ancestor's record read only?
(2) Is there any way I could get some more information on him on family search?
Short Answers:
(1) Because, Lyman SMITH ( LZ2W-LJY ), is an EARY Church Member, of significance.
(2) 'Yes', provide the 'Link' to the "Source"; and, 'FamilySearch' can/will attached such to Lyman SMITH.
Now ...
That Said ...
Individuals/Persons of some significance (and, not just Members of the Church) are often MADE "Ready-Only" by 'FamilySearch'; BECAUSE, they have countless "Living" Descendants, many of whom are working on their "Ancestral" Lines; and, want to "Contribute" to their Ancestors; unfortunately, not all those "Living" Descendants are experienced in Genealogy/Family History (and/or, even, using "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'); as, such, those individuals/persons of some significance are MADE "Ready-Only" by 'FamilySearch'; so that, their "Profiles", in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch', are NOT inadvertently (lets say) "Damaged".
So ...
That Said ....
Individuals/Persons of some significance, that are MADE "Ready-Only", by 'FamilySearch', can ONLY be "Worked" on by (Specialists in) 'FamilySearch'.
As such ...
IF, you are a "Living" Descendant of individuals/persons of some significance, that have been MADE "Ready-Only", by 'FamilySearch'; and, wish some, information; detail; "Source"; and/or, "Memory", added to those individuals/persons; THEN, one simply "Requests" such; as, you have done here, in this post of yours.
In addition, to what you have already supplied, in this post of yours, simply provide a provide the 'Link' to the "Source" (ie. the Short Biography, in a Family Book, that was published in 1990 - provided such is NOT subject to "Copyright"); and, 'FamilySearch' can/will attached such to Lyman SMITH ( LZ2W-LJY ).
The "Moderators" [ ie. 'FamilySearch' "Support" (Personnel) ], in this Forum, can then forward the matter onto the Department in 'FamilySearch' handling such matters to action.
Here is a "Knowledge Article" in 'FamilySearch':
What are read-only records in Family Tree?

I hope this helps, somewhat.
