How do I add a new unattached record?

If I'm understanding your question correctly, you would like advice on what to do with a source you've found that you believe is for a relative, but you do not have sufficient information yet to place that relative in your family tree.
I can think of two options. One, you can save the source citation in your Source Box and put a note on some of the people who might be related (to remind yourself of the source's existence). The other option is to use the "Add Unconnected Person" link at the bottom of the Recents menu to create a profile for the possibly-relative, attach the source to it, and add the profile to your watchlist ("Following") so that you can find it easily once you've figured out the correct relationship(s).

Hello @KENNETHJARMAN,
It looks like you are finding a person who is related to you in the Search section of FamilySearch and want to add the source to a person to your tree.
Would you please give us an idea of where the source is located and the Person ID of your ancestor that the source should be linked to.
Thanks!

Family Search is the best genealogy program I have found. I started with the stand alone before I had internet, over 25 years ago.

To add an unconnected person, follow the steps laid out in the Knowledge Article
Glad you like the system. It has its weaknesses but a lot of strengths as well!
