Place names
6 months ago, when I was indexing records from the United States, the instructions were to NOT include United States, unless it had been written in the record. Since then I’ve tried to standardize a few places and I notice that they all include United States. Example: Idaho Falls, Idaho, United States, SO the question is; should the United States now always be included in the place when indexing? Or do we only type what is on the line ?

It depends on the instructions, field helps, and examples. For instance, there are some naturalization projects that show to index United States or United States of America and others do not. It becomes a little confusing and I am keeping all the examples open in different windows when I index or review these projects.

So the golden rule is still to follow directions given in the project tips? I have been doing naturalization records today and it HAS been confusing. Thank you for your timely reply!

Field Help and Project Instructions are the best guides for how to index each batch. Keep in mind that the instructions can change even within a project if they needed to be clarified or even changed. It is a good idea to always check them before indexing a batch to insure you are doing them as instructed.

@solson I am working on one set at a time so as not to get confused. I was going back and forth between them, but, it is too difficult. Still having to look at the examples though several times throughout my reviewing sessions because the indexers are very confused too.

Thank you so much! I appreciate your time and it’s good to know I’m not the only confused indexer/ reviewer here. :)
