I found possible common ancestors with someone and reached out to the person who entered the original info, but never get any response back. I found lots of the birth and death places were entered in the old system and now are not in standardized format. What should I do? May I go ahead to edit the places in standardized format?

Yes, I would edit the places in standardized format so that the algorithms will be able to find more records, and other researchers would find the place which they are finding easily.

People do not usually respond and I find it frustrating, and there might be a variety of reason including one that they might not have looked at FamilySearch for awhile.
