Presentation on Search algorithm

How does Search decide rankings of results?
What search terms are most important? Name? Birth Info? Residences? Other family members?
What do exact searches actually consider exact to mean?
What wildcards are available and how do they work?
What is the most effective way to filter results?
What is the most efficient way to use the new Search page?
How do I get the results I want to the top of the list?
Why are there always so many results that don't seem to have anything to do with my search terms?

Very disappointed in you Gordon. How could you help destroy a perfectly good, (and faster) search engine! Help in creating a new (SLOWER) search engine and interface that takes away my FREE AGENCY AND MAKES WE WANT TO DELETE MY ACCOUNT AND QUIT FAMILYSEARCH ALLTOGETHER! - Hello FamilySearch Community! @don martin thomas, I think you misunderstood something here. This was a request for the upcoming RootsTech that someone from FamilySearch give this presentation. Certainly not me! I have no more connection to FamilySearch than you do and have nothing to do with updates to the FamilySearch website.
Since the new search page is probably not going anywhere, it would be nice if the people who did develop it explain why the changes were made, what advantages it has, how to use it efficiently, and why people get unexpected results.

"Oh, Casey, I'm not sure there is any way to kindly ask if your team is ready for howls of outrage when the new search page is released from a sub-group of long term users of FamilySearch who will all exclaim that FamilySearch is abandoning "real genealogists" in favor of "newbie hobbyists," "the same ones that should never be allowed here because all they do is mess up Family Tree" and will all gnash their teeth over being "accredited experts who are being forced back into kindergarten." - Hello FamilySearch Community! It might be nice for you "if the people who did develop it explain why the changes were made, what advantages it has, how to use it efficiently, and why people get unexpected results," as for myself I am out of here, and so done with FamilySearch. My contributions to the FamilySearch "Family Tree" will be showing they ended on 29 Tuesday September 2021, (the day I got the new search engine). I will not add another thing to the FamilySearch "Family Tree" using a slow clunky search engine, and wish now I had not left ancestry.com - I will do Temple work but ask for a name. Glad my family and close extended family have all had their Temple work done. Feel sorry for newbies just coming into genealogy.
Thanks to Brett I am not going to delete my FamilySearch account in that I need it to put people I am following back in place in the FamilySearch "Family Tree." Putting people I am following back in place in the "Family Tree" does change the date of "My Contributions." NOTE: THAT I AM NOT ADDING NEW PEOPLE TO THE FAMILY TREE WITH THE NEW SEARCH ENGINE. Still have not used the supposedly better search engine and still refusing to use it, and will not use it ever again, WHICH MEANS I WILL NEVER ADD NEW PEOPLE TO THE FAMILY TREE. above updated 7 October 2021.
End of this Feedback - Don Martin Thomas
