including race in the name fields of Missouri Marriage Licenses, 1940
While indexing Missouri Marriage Licenses in the year 1940, I occasionally come across a bride or groom's name like the following: "Lee Madison (Col)". I assume, but don't know for sure, that the clerk is noting that the person is colored. There is no race field on the form I am indexing into. How do I handle this notation? Do I enter it in the given name field, do I enter it in the surname field, or do I not enter this notation at all?
As I said, the (Col) notation is sporadic. It is not on every license.
The link for the batch number I am working on is https://www.familysearch.org/indexing/batch/8715b6d5-d6ba-4ee1-8484-adfd27deb466

I wasn't able to view the link but can respond 'generally' to the question. If Col is appearing periodically then I would assume - as you have - that it is indicating race - but this would not be part of the name and therefore would not be included in any of the name fields. The Project Instructions might state something about this?
