How do I find a person, or child of a person, that I already know is somewhere in my family tree?

    Hello StorkJefferyDuane2,

First, please realize that the Family Tree at FamilySearch.org is one big shared family tree. Like a big fishing net connecting relationships, rather than your own personal tree. Sometimes we say "my tree" or "your tree" when we are referring to those individuals who are related to you.

In order to "Find" a person who might be already in the Family Tree, you would click on "Family Tree" at the top and then choose "Find" from the menu. You then have the option to "Find By Name" or "Find By ID" if you happen to know the ID number of the person.

If the person has never been added to the shared Family Tree, you can use the "add" feature to add a spouse, parent or child.

Please give us more details about the person you are looking for and we might be able to help in a more specific way. Thanks!

    I am just another 'lowly' User/Patron ...

Question: Is the Person; or, Child of a Person, you are seeking, STILL "Living"; or, "Deceased"?

    Please advise.

The REASON that I ask, is that, you will NOT "Find" an individual/person in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch', that is STILL "Living"; UNLESS, you created them; and, they reside in the "Private Spaces" of your 'FamilySearch' Account.

We CANNOT, 'find'; and/or, 'see', either, the "Living" Users/Patrons, of "Family tree" of 'FamilySearch'; NOR, can we , 'find'; and/or, 'see', the "Living" individuals/persons, in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch', that were created by OTHER Users/Patrons.

    Brett and 886EZL,

Thank you for your quick response. Those I'm looking for are deceased and several generations back. Thanks for sharing with me the Family Tree at FamilySearch.org is one big shared family tree and name searches are done across the whole collective. I did not know that my family group pages could not be searched out like the the fan chart does. I have used the "Find" and "Find by name" option. But the results were far too many to sort through. I found "Recents" and "My Contributions" (100's), to be more useful if I did the work. However, I was looking for names that my late wife did years ago before she passed.

What happened, is I recently added MyHeritage.com from the church partners list. The site asked me to merge my FamilySearch data with their site. But soon I got an email saying that they found 349 tree consistency issues. Nearly all the issues on my late wife's side several generations. Searching through their list, none of their names provided, was I able to find on my tree. So I was looking for a search function just in my family records. I will disregard their list for now.

    Thank you, Jeff Stork

I have another help request. How do I swap marriage partners? There are two brothers and I attached the wrong wives to them. I need to swap the wives (and their parents) to their correct husbands. Thank you, Jeff Stork.

    https://www.familysearch.org/help/helpcenter/article/a-person-in-family-tree-has-the-wrong-spouse

Write down the ID number of the spouse that needs to be removed and added somewhere else. Then you can use the pencil-in-a-box icon in the marriage box to remove the wrong person. Be sure to be on the page of the correct parent to go with the children and remove the other person.

Then use the ID number to add the spouse to the correct spouse.

Removing a spouse from a relationship will not delete the person, it will only detach the relationship.

When asking additional questions, it is best to go back to Q&A, select a category and then ask a new question. That will allow others to see the question and also put the question in the correct category.

    Best wishes!
