ancestor listed as Rus Polish on American Census
Hi! My ancestor was born in 1870, and immigrated to the US in 1900. He and his wife are listed as Rus Polish on the census. Does this mean they were born in Russia and are of Polish desent? I'm just trying to figure out what to put in for the location of birth. The indexed information states Russia, however I want to understand it and ensure that is correct.
the Cielesz family in the census.
Thanks in advance!

I have this issue with a family I am researching who came to England in the late 19th century. They are sometimes listed in the census as being born in Russia, other times as Poland.
Quite simply, Poland was considered part of the Russian empire at this time, so it's a bit like me, today, saying I was born in the United Kingdom, but on other occasions that I was born in England! Both are correct.
I'm surprised there is no standard place name of "Poland, Russia" or "Poland, Russian Empire" in Family Tree. I have just entered "Poland, Russia" for individuals born in Poland at that period, although this standardizes to just "Poland".
(See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_Partition, or just Google the term, as suggested above, to form your own interpretation of a complicated piece of politics.)

My brother-in-law also has ancestors from “Russian Poland”. I could give a long winded explanation but it’s probably easiest just to Google the term.
