Please add the following as a standardized place to provide a historical accurate option:

Friesau, Schleiz, Thüringen, Germany

(bold reflects current standardized place names for Friesau)

According to the genealogy.net Historic Gazetteer, Friesau fell in the following jurisdictions through the years: http://gov.genealogy.net/item/show/FRISAU_O6851

pre-1922: Friesau, Reuß ältere Linie, Germany

1922-1952: Friesau, Schleiz, Thüringen, Germany (requesting to be added)

1952-1993: Friesau, Lobenstein, Thüringen, Germany (recommendation to be added as well)

1993-2002: Friesau, Ebersdorf, Saale-Orla-Kreis, Thüringen, Germany (this is the same as current standardized place: Friesau, Ebersdorf Thüringen, Saale-Orla-Kreis, Thüringen, Germany - just without the identification of which Ebersdorf [there are multiple towns named Ebersdorf])

2003-present: Friesau, Sallburg-Ebersdorf, Saale-Orla-Kreis, Thüringen, Germany

Note:

before 1902/1922 - Reuß ältere Linie

after 1920/1922 - Thüringen

These two jurisdictional levels did not exist at the same time. Recommendation would be to delete the current standardized place options:

Friesau, Reuß ältere Linie, Thüringen, Germany

Friesau, Ebersdorf Thüringen, Schleiz, Reuß jüngere Linie, Thüringen, Germany

Friesau, Burgk, Reuß ältere Linie, Thüringen, Germany

I would recommend also deleting the following standardized place. While Ebersdorf was part of the Schleiz district before 1922 until 1952, Friesau was not part of Ebersdorf at that time. By the time Friesau was part of Ebersdorf, the next level of jurisdiction was the Salle-Orla-Kreis.

Friesau, Ebersdorf Thüringen, Schleiz, Reuß jüngere Linie, Germany (not historically correct)

Friesau, Burgk, Reuß ältere Linie, Germany (Burgk refers to the court district)

The Family Tree gazetteer has a separate process for requisition additions and corrections. Start here:

    https://www.familysearch.org/research/places/?pagenum=1&pagesize=20

Use the link "Contribute facts and suggest new places".

PS: Mods, the links here from Vital Details:Birth:Edit etc are broken.

The standardization of place names is beyond frustrating.

First , in Europe especially, countries change state and municipal boundaries frequently, as a result what Family Search regards as correct often isn't. As a point in fact, what you have listed in Norway is Bergen, Bergen, Norway. In actuality it is Bergen, Midhordland, Vestland, Norway.

Second, very often records of actual place of birth, death , and/or marriage are not available due to lost records, or records that are not yet available. entering a place, for example Norway, when you cannot be sure it is accurate, defeats, in my mind the ability for accurate information to passed to others.
