Places in England, or United Kingdon

I have a relative who died in Hensol, Glamorgan, Wales in 1793. When I try to standardized it the program adds on United Kingdom, which didn't exist in 1793. How do I enter it?

We were able to go to the Help feature at the top right corner of FamilySearch.org and click on Help Center, thereafter we typed How do I suggest a new place to FamilySearch Places? Entering standardized place name is a work in progress, as @CarolynLawrence1 indicated. It would be good to follow her suggestion.

In the meantime, the information below, comes from an article in the Help Center called "How do I enter dates and places into Family Tree, which may be useful.

Tips for places:

• The database of standard places is not yet complete. The standards will improve over time.
• If possible, enter the place-name as it existed when the event happened.
• You have the option to enter places in your native language or the native language of that place.
• If the correct standard is not available, type the place as you want it to be recorded, type a space, and then type a version of the place-name that can be standardized. This place-name can be the modern-day place-name or the name of the county, state, province, or country where it is currently located.

It is important to understand that FamilySearch holds 2 versions of each place name for any event - (1) the "entered" place name as we wish to see it displayed in the record - reflecting the place name used in the source record - and, (2) - a suitable matching "standard" place name.

This is sometimes misunderstood as thinking that the "entered" place name "has to be" changed to a "standard" value - that is not the case. The requirement is that an "entered" place name needs to be matched with a "standard" place name.

A long standing issue with standard place names in the "British Isles" is that the standard place names do not - yet - include all the variations for England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland/Northern Ireland - specifically not (yet) including any standard place names using "Great Britain" (1707-1800 for the grouping of England, Wales and Scotland) - and has failed to include Ireland in the 1801-1921 version of the "United Kingdom" and has no differention between the United Kingdom of 1801-1921 and the United Kingdom 1922-present.

Accordingly, my practice is for all "entered " place names to terminate with - England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, (Northern Ireland from 1922) . . . and let FamilySearch select whatever standard name it happens to select - the end result will make absolutly no difference to the effectiveness of the "standard" place names in matching place names as it is not the particular string of component place names that are important - but rather the associated GPS co-ordinates - which will not matter whether or not the "standard" place name ends in "United Kingdom", "Wales" or "Great Britain".

And yes - you are right - Hensol, Glamorgan, Wales, United Kingdom - is wrong for the date period and should be updated for further choices - but all those choices will point to the same GPS location.

What you should never do is replace the "entered" place name (as per your source material) with a "standard" place name - and in particular, recognise the unique political structure that currently unites 4 "nations" within the present official title of "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" and previously as "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland".

I'd like to know how to distinquish Horton as a Parish record for many births and marriages, which is located south of Morthpeth and north of Newcastle, but the standaradized place name comes up Horton by Wooler, which is 42 miles to the North. This happens mostly after 1801. This is misleading to many unskilled researchers. Horton was still a record keepng Parish even after 1837 (in FMP). Why not a Horton by Morpeth in Standardized place name. It holds 100's of records. Horton by Wooler as far as I know is not a Parish. Refer to Parish locations in FS Historical maps.
