I have several ancestors where the city and county listed for where they were born, do not match the selections given. Possibly the location has changed designation over the years from one county to another.

How do I make sure these places are standardized?

Usually, on FamilySearch, there are several options for a standardized place name, depending on time. For example: "Virginia, British Colonial America" and "Virginia, United States" for the same place at different times.

If the issue is with daughter counties, there are a couple of good map sites showing county and state formation with boundary changes over time. One is https://www.mapofus.org/ and the Newberry Library has another one.
