I am trying to find the mother of Hannah Pattison born about 1879/1880 in Windy Nook, County Durham. Her father was James Pattison and her mother's first name was Elizabeth. Please can anyone help?

    Hi Janet.

Was able to find an Hannah 'Lizzie' Pattison 1879–1923 • GHY3-QP2, born in Windynook, Durham, however she is married to a James and the 1881 census shows her parents are John Pattison, mother Elizabeth. Is this the correct person? If not, do you have the ID for your Elizabeth please?

Thank you. You have the right Hannah. She married twice, first to James Simpson then to James Stevenson. I have copies of both marriage certificates and both give her father's name as James Pattison. The GRO gives the mother's maiden name as Burn but when I look up her known siblings I can find no consistency in the mother's name and I can't find a marriage between James Pattison and Elizabeth Burn.

Taken a look and the picture is confusing!

The 1881 census record to which Diana refers has Hannah Lizzie Pattison age 1 born Windy Nook, father John – a farmer, (age 44 born White House Barns, Durham) and mother Elizabeth (age 36, born Felton, Northumberland). The problem here is the father’s name is John, not James.

This seems to fit with the 1911 census when Hannah is married but living with her widowed mother (age 66, born Newcastle, Northumberland).

The problem is trying to find her parents on other census records.

appears to have found them but the records are only partially consistent. For example John is a coal miner in 1871. To go from coal miner to farmer is a massive leap! Be worth a contact to compare notes

Probable birth registration Hannah Elizabeth Pattison Apr-Jun 1879 Gateshead Vol: 10a Page: 798 Worth getting this to see what it gives for her mother's maiden name and also her father's first name.

Hopefully that will give you some more to go on!

    Regards

    Graham

you can search the GRO index at -- https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp#Results

at no cost -- you do have to create a free account. But you will find minimal information including Mothers maiden name.

    PATTISON, HANNAH ELIZABETH  BURN

GRO Reference: 1879 J Quarter in GATESHEAD Volume 10A Page 798

appears to be the individual in question with the mothers maiden name --- Burn

    Hope this helps.

Thank you. My problem is that there is no consistency in the mother's maiden name for the known siblings of "my" Hannah Pattison.
