Green icon for ordinances that are already reserved & shared

Karen Marie Doncouse said: Having the ordinances that are already reserved but shared with the temple as "green"is very distracting & is making it much more difficult to do genealogy. I have clicked on 20-30 ordinances in the last few days that are "green", ie meaning needing to be done, only to find that they are already reserved. To me, this means that they are taken care of, not needing to be done. Please make them a different color so that it is easier to find the ordinances that need to be done without wasting a lot of time checking on those that are already reserved.

We all share an active interest in using the resources of this site and as users, we have various levels of knowledge and experience and do our best to help each other with concerns, issues, and/or questions.
First, a green icon indicates that an ordinance is available and needs to be done. That has been its traditional role, requiring the user to reserve the ordinance or obtain ownership of the reservation.
Ordinances Ready was the first new feature that was created by a massive rewrite of the Temple system in FamilySearch. A user could always hope that the system would grab a relative's needed ordinance, but it was mostly "hit or miss".
With the recent change, users can now reserve ("grab") shared ordinances directly from their browser without having to go through the process previously required to obtain the reservation.
Jim Greene discussed this same color icon problem in several other discussion threads. I'm not sure what is going to be done, but a number of factors are involved, including where you look at the green icon.
In pedigree views, a user can reserve ordinances by clicking on the green icon.
If the person's ordinance page is used, everything is displayed, including who reserved and subsequently shared the ordinance and when.
It should be noted that although the green icon previously indicated that the ordinance was not reserved, that is no longer the case. Now one can reserve an ordinance through FamilySearch with the traditional "not currently reserved," Ordinances Ready for both not currently reserved (last option in the order used to select an ordinance) and reserved and temple shared by others (usually related to the person), and now directly "pull" shared ordinances with the same 90-day restriction used with Ordinances Ready.
That presented the designers with a dilemma. How does one indicate that regardless of the shared or available state, does one indicate, with one icon, that the user can reserve (grad) an ordinance and take it to the temple?
Jim indicated in one of his responses that the backlog of names needs to be reduced and as such, the green icon is being used to get members to quickly "grab and go" to the temple with the ordinances for temple shared names.
I do not know of any usable solution to eliminate having to check to see if the ordinance is shared or available for searching when methods other than the person's ordinance page is used for reservations.0 -
JimGreene said: Thanks Tom for this summary. Actually, I need to apologize and clarify. While the temple list size is certainly an issue that we are looking at, it is not the primary issue. I am going to paste a copy of one of my other responses which better brings out the primary desired outcome:
The temple experience can be a very moving and motivating experience, even a life-changing one. There is real power associated with the turning of hearts. We have found through our research that the most profound experience is when we know the loved one for whom we are doing the work. Followed close behind by us knowing that person vicariously through our research and efforts to qualify them for temple work. Next, we have found that knowing we are related to the person for whom we are officiating is a better experience than doing the work for a random name given us upon arrival. It is our desire, and our leader's desire, that every member have the most rich temple experience possible. We know that not everyone has the ability or even desire to do family history research. However, everyone should be able to easily come in to the FamilySearch app, either on their phone or on their desktop, and find someone to whom they are related who needs ordinances, find out some basic information, and go to the temple. That is why we are presenting the names that are reserved and shared as available. We want them to feel that they can go in and find these names easily. Ordinances Ready is also a vital part of this plan, and we will be doing other things in steps to make this goal a reality. Our ultimate goal is that every person who arrives at the temple comes already knowing for whom they will be serving. And hopefully knows a little about them. Even if that means pulling out their phone in the parking lot!! Thus, my question. The day could come where temples don't have or don't need lists. More food for thought....:) The things we now do manually, are candidates for automation. We need to build a system that users can trust, and users need to learn how to trust the system. Thanks again for all you do to contribute to this work, and especially for such a kindly worded posting!0 -
R Greg Leininger said: how about LIGHT GREEN for those Unreserved and available for selecting, and the old DARK GREEN for those who can be claimed BUT have already been shared w the temple.0

Karen Marie Doncouse said: Light green & dark green would be great. The current system is continuing to frustrate & aggravate me each time that I do my genealogy. I see names that are "green" & I click on 10-20 names before I find one that still needs their work done. I am afraid that this will lead to burn out, as we may begin to think "this work has all been done, no need to keep checking." There is so much work to be done. Please make it so that it can be done more efficiently.0

Anything that needs to have ordinances done will be green. Items that have been shared with the temple ALSO need to have their ordinances done, that is why they are green too.
The "reservation" that a person does on an ordinances in order to share it with the temple is not really active after they share the name with the temple. Again, that is why you are seeing it green, because you can now reserve it, print it, and take it to the temple.I see names that are "green" & I click on 10-20 names before I find one that still needs their work done
Again, ANY ordinance showing as green MUST have their work done.
I'm not sure where you are getting the idea that ordinances shared with the temple "do not have to have their work done". If they didn't have to have their work done, why would someone have shared them with the temple?0 -
Karen Marie Doncouse said: I'm sorry you did not understand. Green ordinances that are already reserved do not need any action by me. They do not need to be reserved & shared again. When I have to click on the name, then on the ordinances, only to discover that they are already reserved, it is not only a waste of time, it is very frustrating. When they were red, it was much more clear, and I could continue on to others that need their ordinances reserved.
As I previously stated, this wastes time that I could be using to research ancestors that need their work done.0 -
JimGreene said: If you are looking for people in the tree who need action, perhaps looking at the orange icons would be a good substitute now that green doesn't mean what it used to for you. Just a thought.0

Karen Marie Doncouse said: Ok, but then all of the people that need their ordinances done that have not been reserved & shared would not be done. These are the people that I am looking for. I am the only member in my family, so I have a lot of work to do. This is slowing me down a great deal.0

Karen Marie Doncouse said: According to the Legand, orange is for ordinances that cannot be requested. For example, seal to spouse for someone that died as an infant.0

JimGreene said: I just want to put your mind at ease if I can. Ordinances Ready will find them and make sure they are done. It may take a little time right now (hopefully not much more than having a large temple list), but we are working hard to mainstream Ordinances Ready so that more and more of the everyday ordinances performed (when the temples open) come from Ordinances Ready. That is what we ultimately designed it to do, find the green temples in the tree and get the work done. We are hoping to automate the finding and sharing that you are doing now so that you can do other things that can't be automated yet. In the meantime, I apologize for the pain and frustration that we have caused you.0

JimGreene said: What that means is that it cannot be requested (right now or just yet), for various reasons. There are actually 3 possible sets of reasons why you cannot request this now:
- Needs more information--We need more data (e.g. birthplace) or a standard place.
- Not available--FamilySearch will not show the information (e.g. Holocaust, famous person, etc.)
- Not ready-- Some time needs to pass (e.g. a year since death, etc.) for it to be ready
