New Memories features 2024
Clicking on early access I've viewed memories. I was able to find at length how to change the visibility settings. My overall impression of the changes in memories or specifically when looking at a memory are-
- Visuals are smaller and faint. For example in audio. So many of us using the platform have "tired" eyes, please have mercy on us. The new format is not user friendly for visually challenged.
- Having to click on down arrows in the right pane is labourious and visually chaotic. When users have so much information to add quickly and accurately, the drop down menu is a hindrance to adding information. I want to see all information at once on the screen.-
- I'm assuming that non contributors viewing a memory also have to use the drop down menu to access information. This is not an ideal way of enticing people to soak up information at at glance and provide commentary in one hit.
- Viewing Memories has timed out in trying to provide more examples.

Wow, that is different! I had been so busy looking at the new Group Tree that I hadn't gone into memories. Overall a good change and probably necessary given the number of items being updated.
A couple of issues though:
- I can no longer use the left and right arrow key to move from one memory to another
- The word SUBMIT instead of SAVE is a bit confusing. It suggests someone is going to moderate the change before it is saved.

@denisecynthiawatson1 Your suggestions are great. Thank you! Could you explain your last comment more, though?

As per my last comment...it has been 2 weeks. I suppose I find the feedback challenging too. There are so many changes and things aren't working intuiatevly that I now can't remember what I was referring to. I know that when I'm working in memories, editing or clicking on the person's name which is very small above the image, (which has disappeared today just when I went to take a screen shot) , the site crashes/freezes and it takes me 3-4 attempts to edit one thing.
When I type in the tag box the site freezes or crashes. That takes a few attempts just to insert one name. see above. I'm trying to move the tagging box and it won't shift. There is no cursor to move it. Again, it has frozen. I can't scroll down for possible names...still frozen...

I agree with Marlene Pitman...the submit button suggests moderation....not a save. Prefer "save".

I've just noticed that an icon for private ie a locked symbol in the gallery page is the same if the image visibility is for limited access by a group.
It would be great to have a limited access icon. It helps me know what images I've converted for my groups to view.

Not all "improvements" are that. The new memories method of tagging is truly cumbersome. Who decided that the old method had to be IMPROVED??? PLEASE turn off the new method and return us to the OLD, very stable, and highly workable method. What has been done here has to be VERY discouraging to anyone not fully immersed in and dedicated to family history. It presents as a barrier, not a help to good documentation. I give this change a resounding ZERO for value added.

I agree that the method of tagging jpg memories is cumbersome. System can hang when trying to adjust the tagging box and when entering tag name. Memory dropdowns on the right aren't intuitive but may be beneficial depending on the platform (computer vs phone). I also would prefer "Save" over "Submit".

@VogelerBoydE1 Just a quick note that if we stick with the 'old' version of memories, we wouldn't be able to tag to the Limited Access viewing that people have been asking about for many years. We know it is cumbersome and slow. Our engineers are working to fix those items.
@combblai @denisecynthiawatson1 & @MarlenePitman Thank you for your suggestions! Nobody sees the same thing and after working on the system until they are blind, sometimes our product team really becomes blind to some of these changes that seem so obvious to new users!

Thanks for the acknowledgement of the suggestions. Users definitely differ in features they rely on - eg I use the left and right arrow to scroll through memories a lot so found it jarring when it wasn't there any more.
Looking forward to seeing how this develops further.
As I think has been said elsewhere, it would be good if the Details component of the information section could be more prominent, opened by default or similar. It isn't easy to get people to populate the date and place fields, but will be harder when they are less visible.

What has happened to the limited access feature for family group memories? I was using it and then it disappeared.

@denisecynthiawatson1 I just tested and can still use the Limited Access visibility. There have been several updates to the system, have you cleared your cookies and tried afterwards?
If you are are still seeing a place where you expected the Limited Access visibility and you are not seeing it, can you send a screenshot of your whole screen? Also, what operating system and browser are you using?

Hi Anne I didn't realize I needed to sign into early access every time I signed into family search. The reason I thought it was current was because the new features in Memories were visible. Ok. So now the Limited Access is visible. However, I still hope the icon will change from the padlock to maybe an open padlock or something else that differentiates between public and private and limited. I also realized that by signing into early access again, I was able to see the invite list. So am I to understand that I can invite anyone to the group that is in the tree?

Feedback on tagging screen freezing… I will upload my screen of what is happening. Yes, I've deleted cookies/cache. Mozilla is more responsive than chrome. Chrome takes about 15 minutes to load a name. I'm using Windows 10.
In the first photo I start typing a name and it freezes and I can't click the box next to the name.
In the 2nd photo I have clicked on the photo to bring up the tagging box and it it appears faded. I had to reload the page.
In the 3rd photo the pop up box appears with "page unresponsive" happens every time I go to tag in Chrome, every time I click.
Time slot is Australia AEST.
Photo number 4
When I was tagging tonight in Mozilla, while waiting for it to unfreeze and load the name the photo rotated.
In photo number 5
I enter the I.D number of the person in the tree but it comes up with a blank in the box. I have waited 5 minutes and still no name appears.

Thank you, @denisecynthiawatson1 We will get these details to the product team and see what they can tell us about the problem.

Thank you I look forward to a resolution as 2 weeks later, there is no alteration to the problem.
Also, is it possible to have a separate icon to differentiate between a private- limited access - public memory? As it stands there is only a locked icon for both private and limited access. These need to have their own icons.

So far, so good for me. I have always wanted to contribute info and my feelings about different aspects of certain programs. I am delighted to be able to BETA test family group trees.
I do find the home page for the family group trees a little difficult to maneuver, especially for a person new to FamilySearch. For me it's like eating an elephant. One bite at a time.
Maybe not intended, but I think this will take the place of some rootsmagic type programs. Just my thoughts
