Adding missing Irish townlands

I asked on the family tree forum https://community.familysearch.org/en/discussion/143285/suggest-a-new-place-no-townland-category where it was suggested that I ask hete.

I'll repeat the question.

Familysearch's standardised placenames include some, but by no means all, Irish townlands as a level below civil parishes:

The main townlands associated with my ancestors are not on the list, so I wish to suggest their addition.

However, townland is not one of the available categories.

What is the recommended way for me to proceed ?

I don't know the recommended way to proceed - but I've submitted townlands with reference to civil registration districts/Civil Parish as parent places and with logainm.ie | Placenames Database of Ireland reference - and received the feedback that the townland has been added. So as long as you pick a parent place that is in the database and Suggest an Improvement - I think you are on the right track.

It would be interesting to get places team feedback if there is a recommended way to proceed. Many townlands appear as though they were prepopulated by places team. But there does seem to be some confusion - some townlands are entered as townlands others as different classifications of places (for example: Ballygarvan)

Thanks, I've posted a separate request in this group to add the main townland of interest to me, Ballykearney.

Thanks also for the logainm.ie link - very useful. Also just found the Research links under each FamilySearch Standardized Place - very helpful too.

I've been using the map viewer at the OSI website with the MapGenie 6" First Edition to track down townlands. That seems to show all townlands as subdivisions of civil parishes, with some split across two parishes.

Re your example, from those sources there appear to be two Ballygarven townlands - one in Carrigaline Co Cork, the other in Inishargy Co Down. GoogleMaps also shows a Ballygarven village in Co Cork.

The two Ballygarven Co Down townlands in the FS standard places make sense to me as the designations pre/post partition around 1920-22 would be different. However, both omit the civil parish.

I assume the populated place is the village, and I'll take the registration district on trust.

So the Co Cork Ballygarven townland appears to be missing.

But I'll wait to see how the Ballykearney request goes before doing anything else.

As noted in the other forum: The request to add "Townland" as option for "Suggest a New Place" was discussed with the Authorities team.

They would prefer the place be suggested, then followup with a Feedback email to change it to the type "Townland". By design all place types are not included. This allows each place request to be checked for the correct place type, by the editors.

FYI BallyGarvan has been changed to a Townland. This can be seen at:
