Can someone assist me in finding a relative that is related to my grandfather?
Dear community,
Hope everything is going well.
I just joined this group in the hopes of finding any information that would assist me to track down any relatives that might be related to my grandfather. He made his way to Venezuela in the 1930s or 1940s, where he raised a lovely family.
In 2018 I discovered a few letters from one of his sisters begging for assistance dated July 8th, 1960, this was several years before he passed away. As per my mother and grandmother's stories, there was no relationship between families which I can't confirm as I wasn't in plans to be born.
One of my friends helped me translate this letter in 2018, and it was only recently that I was able to travel to Zurich in hopes to complete my investigations. To be more specific, I just arrived on November 14th, 2022 and will leave in two days, on November 16th.
Since this will be included in a small book I'm creating, it would be unbelievable if anyone could respond before I depart. I hope someone responds before I go.
Any assistance is greatly appreciated and feel free to ask any questions.
Rodolfo Alejandro Muhlemann

Welcome to the community, Rodolfo !
With your rather limited information it is almost impossible, however, to give any meaningful advice. Apart from that, it is usually not effective to just turn up at offices or archives, without first clarifying what you are looking for. Whilst archive staff will not do extensive research for you (they just won't have the time for this), they will often be willing to answer emails and send information which can be found easily. Which brings us back to my statement above: what exact information have you got (names, dates, …) based on which sources?
An important information would be the place of citizenship - see https://hls-dhs-dss.ch/famn/index.php?lg=e. This tells you that the earliest Mühlemann citizenship in canton Zürich would be in 1875 in the city of Zürich, originally from Alchenstorf BE … could be your line. You'll also see that Mühlemann are mainly coming from canton Bern.
In case you are going to start a new discussion with more information - I had proposed a structure for discussion titles on ttps://community.familysearch.org/de/discussion/129680/what-title-would-be-best-for-postings and hope for many opinions: what do you think about this? Alternatively you could just adopt this format in your future postings 😉.

Hi Wseelentag,
Thank you so much for your quick response.
I know I did not submit enough information as I was asking more as an exploration question to understand this group's reach, which I now see, is massive! What amazing news.
So, regards the structure, I will follow your recommendation in a new comment so we can have everything organized.
In this chat, I will add some of the critical documents I have just in case they can be helpful in the future.
On the other hand, I went to the Family Search office here in Zurich to find the birth certificates of my great-grandmother and Grandfather but it was closed.

OK - let me bring that first into the format common with German speaking researchers in Europe - following the Kekule numbering system.
1) Rodolfo Alejandro Mühlemann
2) Father
4) Rudolf Mühlemann (Stäubli) [grandfather] (is he the one born December 9th 1902, Died in March31st 1966 in San Felipe-Yaracuy, Venezuela?)
8) Friedrich Mühlemann, von Bönigen BE and
9) Bertha Ida (Mühlemann) Stäubli. Born December 9th 1902, Died in March31st 1966 in San Felipe-Yaracuy, Venezuela ?????
Children including my grandfather:
- Predeceased daughter Bertha (Nagel-)Mühlemann (Within her lifetime).
- Predeceased son Fritz Mühlemann (Within her lifetime).
- Johanna (Arni-)Mühlemann
- Elisabeth (Jäcklin-)Mühlemann
- Hans Mühlemann
- Rudolf Mühlemann MY GRANDFATHER (=4)
- Elisabeth (Jacklin) née Mühlemann, widow of Paul Rudolf, from Base.
18) Peter Stäubli and
19) Sophie (née) Hauser, born January 13, 1876, widow of Johann Friedrich, von Bönigen BE, lived at Laupenstrasse 53 in Bern. Died on September 7th, 1959.
19a) Johann Friedrich, von Bönigen BE (first husband).
A general comment first: women always keep their maiden name in any genealogy list: the habit of adding the married name is only confusing … what do you put down if a women is married three times or more often (might not be that common - but does happen!)? And you will definitely not find a Swiss document with " Rudolf Mühlemann (Stäubli)" with Stäubli being his mother's name.
I can confirm from Familiennamenbuch (https://hls-dhs-dss.ch/famn/?lg=e) that Mühlemann have been citizens of Bönigen BE since before 1800. So the Civil Registration Office responsible for Bönigen (https://www.zivilstand.sid.be.ch/de/start/zivilstandsaemter/zaoo.html) should be able to provide a copy of the birth register entry or a "Familienschein" (giving details of his entire family, incl. wife and parents). Ask if they find your grandfather in their registers - and what you have to do (and pay!) to get these documents. If your father is still alive, he will have to enquire!
Should you look for living relatives, the bad news is that these Offices are not allowed to give you any information - prohibited by Swiss privacy legislation (see https://community.familysearch.org/de/discussion/comment/461767/#Comment_461767).
Should you be interested in getting in touch with Swiss residents researching Mühlemann of Bönigen (which might be living relatives) I recommend you post your data on https://www.geneal-forum.com/ … registration is free and without obligation, English is fine (you may have to cope with responses in German).
