I have no idea for crop a, as the section is too small and one cannot compare with other letters. Crop b could refer to Wyssachen, but the above also applies here. Maybe the image of a whole page would help.

The original topic title "Ortsnamen" has been adapted to better summarize the discussion topic - see the suggestion on https://community.familysearch.org/de/discussion/129680/what-title-would-be-best-for-postings.
Neither of the two spellings (as given in the passenger list) immediately reminds me of actually existing place names in Switzerland. To see the entire record is therefore essential to try follow other routes.
You are looking for a couple (married or - as the additional note suggests - siblings?) named Hirsbrunner. You seem to know that Hirsbrunner are (at least originally) all citizens of Sumiswald BE. These two were not born/baptised in Sumiswald. Johann was aged 41 in 1908 - so he would have been born around 1867 (depending on how accurate the given age is). As baptisms at this time were usually also noted in the home parish, the book on external baptisms of Sumiswald should be checked: https://www.query.sta.be.ch/Dateien/19/D96922.pdf. Actually on images 138 and 140 you'll find two Johannes Hirsbrunner of Sumiswald, both baptised in Burgdorf in 1867.
As an alternative I have also checked for Wyssachen - which is parish Eriswil: http://www.query.sta.be.ch/detail.aspx?id=221836. In the surname register you'll actually find a few Hirsbrunner entries in the 1860ies - but no Johannes.
This still doesn't answer the question about the two location names, but may offer other routes of research. Have you got any additional info on Johannes (or Rosa) to help pin them down?
I had also a look at the Sumiswald baptismal register, to see if there are any Johannes Hirsbrunner in 1866/67 born possibly in a small hamlet belonging to Sumiswald … there are:
12.08./01.09.1867 Johannes of Ulrich in Trogägerten (a small hamlet in Sumiswald);
14.04./29.04.1866 Johannes of Johannes "auf den Ebnit" (loads of Aebnit/Ebnit in the region, incl. a small hamlet in Sumiswald).
Unfortunately none fits what you are looking for.

Thank you, WSeelentag, for your kind help.
I believe that the man on the manifest is Johannes, born June 25, 1868 and baptized at Wasen im Emmental. (FHL 2005739, DGS 4027093, IMG 458/556). I would like a transcription (in German) of the baptism and a translation of any archaic words.
I was not aware of Johannes' sister Rosa, but would be interested in finding more out about her. It could be that Johannes was visiting his sister Rosa at one of the named locations, namely "?Brienzerberg"
According to the manifest, both siblings were born at "?Wyssachen Gersberg". I am hoping that this matches something on the baptismal note.
The third link (for Wyssachen) that you posted is broken. I would like to look for Rosa there as well. Is there any information available on what that site (sta.be.ch) has to offer and how to search in it, such as a wiki or video?
Once again, thank you.

The Johannes of interest to me, i.e. the one on the baptismal record that I uploaded, stated that he was born at Wasen. The man on the manifest stated that he was born at "?Wyssachen Gersberg", so they may be two different men. I still would like to know what the locations are in order to absolutely rule him out. I hope that the baptism will cast some light.

Before I respond in more detail - you write
"The Johannes of interest to me, i.e. the one on the baptismal record that I uploaded, stated that he was born at Wasen."
Where did he state that - do you have a document?

On his naturalization.

OK - is there other relevant information you have got which you haven't told us yet?
Can we see a copy?

Here is a partial answer, unfortunately, to my own original question in this thread, namely, regarding two Ortsnamen on an Ellis Island passenger manifest from 1908. I quote from the online Historisches Lexicon der Schweiz (Historical Dictionary of Switzerland): "Wyssachen...bis 1908 Wyssachengraben...."(Until 1908 Wyssachen was named Wyssachengraben.), which is exactly what it reads in my uploaded photo crop-b.jpg.
A hearty Thank You to Daniel57704 for pointing me in the right direction!
I shall more appropriately repost my baptismal request in a separate thread.
