September 15 in Family Tree

I have an ancestor's profile that is so mixed up I can't tell what to detach or correct. The early changes were made by "Family Search." The big, first question is the profile supposed to be my ancestor or some other person with the same name. I would like to have a chance for input before anyone jumps in and makes changes.

He came from Northern Ireland and drowned off the coast of Norfolk, VA in 1809. They were living in Richmond when his daughter was born in 1808. He did marry Ann Collins but no info on her being Martha Ann. It's unlikely he ever went to Kentucky or any other state except for ports he may have been to in the Merchant Marine.

When a profile shows "FamilySearch" as the creator, with a date from 2012-13, that simply means that the profile existed on the previous platform. When the previous FS Tree was imported to the current platform, the contributors' names did not migrate.

You can go through the change log to find the earliest version of the profile. You won't see who created it, but you can get a feel for who that profile was supposed to be.

For example, on LZJV-SR8, the original profile name was James Solomon Stratton, born in 1769 in Virginia, and dying in 1808 in Kentucky.

Do be aware the in the system just before Family Tree which was called New Family Search did allow users to combine duplicate profiles into a single profile. It was similar to the merging we can do in Family Tree. And just like in Family Tree errors could be made. So even that first import into Family Tree in 2012 had a lot of profiles that were a mixture of two or more individual.

So if the profile has a lot of conflicting information all labeled "FamilySearch MTH DAY, 2012" it was probably already corrupted in the previous system. This does increase the work you will need to do to sort things out.

I did look at the change log before I posted the question and again now, and I do not see a "Person added" entry. The first change is Sex, which didn't make sense to me - it seems like name would have to come first, or something like person/profile created. Anyway, one person made a number of changes overnight which doesn't fix the overall problem. So, I will keep my questions generalized and probably won't post links to profiles here anymore since there are people here who just can't hold back and discuss things first. But thanks to you and the other person who answered.

    @CMichael7
I'm sorry someone has made changes after your question. That sometimes happens.

If you look at the screenshot I posted, you'll see that Name, Alternate Names, Sex, Birth, and Death were all added at the same minute. That is also in keeping with a profile imported from New FamilySearch, the previous platform.

Getting back to the problem, I'm going to have to create another James and detach the wife and daughter from the current one and attach them to the new one. I want to keep the marriage sources but move them to the new James. Is there a good way to move a source to another profile?

One thing difficult with discussing things in FamilySearch is that we don't all get the same pages.

A few months ago there was the old change log. Then a new change log was added as one of the lab experiments for people to try. Then it was released into production but people could change back and forth between the old and the new. Looking today, it looks like the old change log is completely gone, at least for me, and the option to change back to old one has been removed.

If @CMichael7 the first change you see is Sex, then you are probably still getting the old change log. The first entries in the new change log look like this with the very first one at the very bottom of the list:

To get what Áine posted you then have to click on View Details on the right on that lowest line to get the full details of what made up the original import on March 11.

I do not have the Improved Person Change Person Log turned on and I no longer see it in the Labs
    Here is what I see:

Gordon thanks for the explanation but I'm not sure what I need to do to get the full list. I can't click on View Details for Person Added because it isn't showing. I was seeing what Nyx773 is seeing.

By the way, I think I'm done with this one (relationships fixed!), on to the next one hopefully.

Glad to hear you're making progress and cleaning things up!

There really isn't too much difference between the old and new change logs. Everything is still recorded there. Some of it is hidden behind an additional click or a collapsed section. And there are some ordering differences.

Here is a comparison between what you and Nyx773 see and what Áine I see.
