What Is "Tree Building Project?"

Anyone know what this is? Is this some sort of volunteer because this is scary if so. Volunteers have a tendency to really mess up things because they don't really know about your families like you do.

    This project has been discussed at considerable length over the last 2+ years.

    @StephenDespot, in summary:

    "TreeBuilding Project", "US Census Project", "CommunityCensusProject", plus variations of those names are automated computer scripts created by Brigham Young University's Record Linking Lab.

    Any username that starts with "treehelper_" are human student volunteers at BYU.

    BYU's RLL has a separate user agreement with FamilySearch in which BYU is not held to the same, higher/stricter standards for data entry as us regular FS users.

    At the end of the post in Áine's reply above is a link to the following post.
    @MandyShaw1 submitted an incredibly thorough abuse report regarding BYU RLL and she continues to update it as more abuse is discovered:

    Since the 2 threads referenced above have both been closed, this is probably the best place to mention that (by pure chance) I gave the BYU RLL data quality report quite a big update yesterday. Link, as before, BYU RLL Data Quality issues report.pdf.

    The changes, in summary, are:

    • Coverage of Living versus Deceased issues
    • Clarification re the APIs used by BYU RLL (and of the apparent lack of associated usage constraints)
    • Refreshed datasets for the examples
    • Removed incorrect information from Reference 4
    • Minor changes to improve clarity and readability

    Could a mod make sure the new version reaches the internal team that was looking at the DQ ticket for the previous submission, please. Thanks.

    Because this topic has been thoroughly discussed in other threads, this thread is now closed. @MandyShaw1 your report will be passed on.
