You don't say what country and what time period, but what you do is use the surname to begin. I assume you know your brick wall ancestor's surname. Do you know when and where he/she was born? If that is the case you begin researching that surname (and all possible spelling variations) in census records, tax records, court records, genealogies, local histories, etc. for that time and place. The reason you should dive into local histories is to determine the migration history. Did people arrive in that location at various times, and from where did they come? Then you begin researching that location as well.

When you find families who are potentially the family of your brick wall, research their marriage(s), their children and their marriages. You are looking for compatible marriage dates and compatible gaps in children's birth years. Sometimes a brick wall is associated with a first wife who died young and was raised by a later wife.

Take special care to look for the possibility that your brick wall's mother became a widow, remarried, then brick wall was raised by a step father and took step father's name as an adult. This will be implied if you can find court or other records where a woman has a maiden name which does not match her father's surname. Again, depending on time and place, it is possible to spot this and again, see if the marriages of the woman are compatible with your brickwall. Then research all the potential siblings and half siblings.

If this begins to result in many "smoking guns" but still no direct proof, begin researching the parents of the suspected parents, ie the brick wall's potential grandparents also their siblings. There you can also sometimes find references to the brick wall'l generation.

Ralfh Rhoe All of this takes time, organization and the ability to sequester yourself so you can think clearly. Also, if you have an account in a different genealogy site, such as Ancestry, I would recommend building test trees there. I don't think they like you building test lineages here. What I can recommend, though, is linking potential parents as "relatives" in the "other" relationship. That way you can keep track of your list of suspects.

If you have done DNA, it can be harnessed to determine if a line produces many DNA matches with the same branch or if there are no DNA matches on that branch at all. I sniffed out the parents of a brick wall for my husband that way after determining two sets of parents that could have been his ancestors, and all this was in Imperial Russia mid 1800s. I have also recently sniffed out parents of a brick wall for myself, and the brick wall's birth was around 1810 in Kentucky with a popular surname. It was marriage and court records of parents and grandparents that all lined up.
