Worcestershire and Herefordshire probate lookup request – KEMBLE
Hello,
Could someone with access to a FamilySearch Centre please help me obtain images of these two probate records?
- Richard Kemble of Little Malvern, Worcestershire — will proved in 1716.
This was in the Consistory Court of Worcester. The original-will microfilm sequence begins with FHL film 97879. The registered-copy-wills index for 1672–1739 is on FHL film 98472. If possible, please check for the original will, any registered copy, inventory, administration or related probate pages.
- Joan Kemble, widow of Welsh Newton, Herefordshire — administration and inventory dated 11 June 1685.
Herefordshire Archive reference: 90/01/10. This may be in the FamilySearch collection described as Original wills, administrations and inventories for the Diocese of Hereford, 1517–1858.
I particularly need every page that might name children, spouses, executors, administrators, siblings, other relatives, residences, property or witnesses. Images of all available pages would be greatly appreciated, even if the handwriting is difficult.
The purpose is to test a possible family relationship between Richard Kemble of Little Malvern and the Welsh Newton family of Captain Richard Kemble, who was a first cousin of Saint John Kemble.

I'm at my Affiliate Library this afternoon. DGS 8042539 (Film 98472) is available at affiliates; access is not limited to FamilySearch Centers.Community guidelines do not permit us to share images of limited-access records. We can, however, report what we see. There is a table of contents listing the names on the film. Image 19 covers the "K" names. I do not see an entry for Richard Kemble.
Using the full-text search option, I did find some information about the Will and inventory of Richard Kemble's property on DGS 8037858.
I'm not finding anything relevant for Joan Kemble. If you can specify a DGS or film, I'll be happy to try again. A will proven in 1865 is not likely to be found in a collection that ends in 1858.2 -

The 1865 date for Joan was my error; it should have been 1685.
Could you please examine the Richard Kemble material you found on DGS 8037858 and report:
- The image number(s), catalogue title and FHL film number.
- Richard's exact residence, occupation/status and the dates of the will, probate and inventory.
- Every relative named and the stated relationship – especially his wife, sons, daughters, brothers, sisters or grandchildren.
- The executor(s), witnesses, inventory appraisers and total value.
- If possible, a transcription of any clauses naming family members or places. A written report is completely fine; I understand that the images cannot be shared.
The Richard we are investigating was buried at Little Malvern on 12 April 1716. Worcestershire Archives' handlist places original probate material covering 1 January–7 May 1716 on its local microfilm 314, so the date and residence will tell us whether DGS 8037858 contains the correct man.
For Joan, the correct details are:

As I mentioned, I found the information for Richard Kemble on DGS 8037858. You can find the details of the DGS, film, and collection in the FS Catalog.

I found the details on Richard Kemble on Images 135-137.
The record is barely legible for me; I can pick out a few words, and the full-text handwriting OCR highlights others.
The inventory list is mostly clear, and the total value is 325.16 -00. Richard's estate is largely livestock: bullocks, cows, sheep, oxen.

For Joan Kemble, if her will was proven in 1685, Film 91687 or DGS 8226021 will not be useful as it covers 1674-75.
DGS 7903863 is more likely to be relevant.
Full-text search returns no results. That's not unusual with script that is difficult to decipher.
There is a Table of Contents, with "K" on Image 341. No Kembles are listed.

@Nick71628 and @Áine.ní.Donnghaile - if Joan Kemble of 1685 is indeed an "administration and inventory" then she shouldn't appear in the Registered Wills films.
These are more likely, in my opinion, to contain what is needed:

I have now searched DGS 8037858 for Kemble and received exactly two Worcestershire 1716 results, but both are restricted to a FamilySearch Centre or Affiliate Library. The image references and inventory information you reported are therefore extremely helpful.

I'm at my FSC this afternoon. Good day to research, since the rain is pouring down.
DGS 8038256 does not have a Table of Contents; the covers lists Admons for April-March 1685, with a later section covering Apr-Mar 1686.
Full-text search is enabled on DGS 8038256. There are 3 hits for "Kemble."
Images 226- 229 (of 1577) cover the estate of joannem Kemble with a date of 11 June 1685. The record is partly in Latin and partly in English, partly preprinted and partly handwritten.John Kemble appears to be the administrator of the estate. The inventory is meager - 11 shillings.
DGS 8309745 does not have a Table of Contents; the cover lists Admons Apr-Mar 1684.2 -
