Subject:

Image Lookup Request - Mississippi Death Index 1923 (File 16989-23)

Body:

Hello! I have located my great-grandfather in the "Mississippi, Death Certificate Index, 1912-1943" database, but the image is restricted from home viewing. I am hoping a volunteer at a FamilySearch Center or Affiliate Library can grab the image file for me. Finding official documents to verify his parents has been a challenge. Johnie was born in 1882, and the 1890 census was destroyed in a fire. He was married by the time of the 1900 census (but lived only a couple of doors away from his parents) in his own household. He married in 1896, before he turned 15, and I've requested a copy of his marriage license, but haven't received it, and I've been told that the license may not include a parent's name. All of the online research reported that he had died in TN, but he was just buried there - they have no record of a death certificate. After much searching, I found his death certificate in a MS index.

Name: John Nathaniel (Johnie) Overall

Death Year: 1923

State File Number: 16989-23

Thank you so much to anyone who can help me see the original handwritten document! He's kind of my missing link for validating the information I have.

    @Katie62296
    The collection https://www.familysearch.org/en/search/collection/3583821 Mississippi, Death Certificate Index, 1912-1943 is an index only. It does not contain images of death certificates.

    The pages look like this one:

    With the information in the index (date, place, and number), you can request a copy from the state of Mississippi. https://www.msdh.ms.gov/msdhsite/_static/31,1248,109,62.html

    I found the actual certificate number in the index - his Mississippi death certificate number is 16989-23. It's my understanding that volunteers from familysearch have access to these old certificates, and with the certificate number, can locate the actual certificate. I apologize if I have been misinformed.

    Thank you so much for responding.

    I'm sorry, but we do not have that access.

    OK, Thanks so much. Guess I'll start the wait of ordering it from the great state of Mississippi.

    @Katie62296 On Ancestry I found his death date as 31 Oct 1923 in Chicksaw, Mississippi if that helps. Also you may find clues to other information in the 1900 and 1910 federal censuses Best wishes
