It depends on what/where/when you are searching. There are many free options for specific locations or specific record types.
If you can be more specific, members may be able to provide you with a list.

If you are in the U.S.:

AncestryLibrary is available for free at many public libraries: if you are on their computers and/or have your device connected to their wi-fi.
AncestryLibrary will give you access to almost all records and sources that you would get with a paid Ancestry account, plus you can see viewable trees created by other users.
The disadvantages include not being able to: create a tree that links to any records or sources, correct/update any sources, see what trees those sources are attached to, and communicate/collaborate with any other users.

From the comfort of your home, some public library websites give free access to other platforms such as MyHeritage, HeritageQuest, and Newspapers.com for your state.

There is also WikiTree.com which is a public tree like family search. It is pretty helpful with early America families and other areas. However, any tree you look at is only as good as the sources. So, when looking at WikiTree, you will want to check out the research and sources.
