When I asked the same question I was told that the engineers want each part of the name in its own box.

Yes, that's what we were told the engineers wanted.

Ashlee C., I learned from a Family Search indexing missionary (and was shown their graphics in their lessons about this) that we don't need to change the AI's indexing of given names all in one box to putting each given name in it's own box in Step 3 since AI never does that and since it all ends up the same in Step 4. So either the missionaries are being trained incorrectly or what the engineers say isn't necessary. We're getting contradictory information.

What should be done when "of" is used in a name to identify someone? I am working on a land record in full name review and the Grantee is identified as John of Wm. Spahr. The AI indexed the name as Wm. Spahr with Wm as the given name and Spahr as surname. Would I add the name John with only the given name since he appears to be the grantee. From my knowledge of the family, the John Spahr who is the son of Wm. Spahr is the one being identified.

"Of" is an identifier used to differentiate between people of similar or the same names such as John Jones the father and John Jones the son. "Of" can also be used to identify what town or place a person lives such as John of Clearfield. Its also used to identify a place or acreage belonging to someone. "Of" is not part of the person's name and should not be highlighted or added to the person's name. Researchers will read at least the entire sentence or even the entire page or document to determine if the subject person (John) is the one they're looking for.
In full name review (FNR) we are simply verifying the name is spelled correctly and that it is the full name. We should not be searching for the correct surname or given name that is not in the same sentence or list.

I'm here to confirm whether each part of the name should be in its own box or if first and middle/middle initial can be highlighted together. This instructional video
shows highlighting "W.B." of "W.B. Burton" in one box. That's how I've been doing it, but the post above is saying each in their own box.

@Shari Griffen Originally the engineers asked that we separate the names in their own boxes. That has since been changed. It's fine to put both given names in the first box. Just make sure they are in separate highlights and leave the second given name box blank.
