Is it correct to state that you will get document hints are only for persons with a relationship to you?

There are many entries in my tree that are in my husband's or in-law children's family, how could I get hints for those?

thanks for your help!

It depends on what you mean by "get document hints."

Record hints can be generated for any person in Family Tree. When you visit their person page, you will see any available record hints for them. That is true for any person in Family Tree, whether you are related to them or not.

You can also see record hints for people shown in various Tree views, and since you can view the tree for any public person in Family Tree, you can see hints for any person's relatives shown in their Tree view. That is also true for the mobile Tree app's Descendants with Tasks feature.

However, there are places that FamilySearch will show you lists of tasks for your ancestors. These places include the home page, the mobile Tree app's Ancestors with Tasks list, and various email campaigns that might be sent to you. Those personalized lists will only include record hints for people related to you. Those lists do not include people who are related to you only through your spouse or children-in-law. But you can always view the Tree for them to see some record hints for their ancestors.

@CecileSarlet good question. I look at "Hints" as computer generated, possible, matches to an individual(s) in the tree. Some may have the same name and general location or dates of interest. But each hint needs to be evaluated to see if it belongs to that person. Sometimes definitely yes. Sometimes maybe but not sure. And other times, definitely not. If yes attach. If no click Not a Match. If unsure, I leave it, pending more research by myself or someone else.

    Have a wonderful day :)

My only amendment to Alan's excellent summary is that (on the website at least) it's only called "tasks" if you have an LDS account. On a public account like mine, they're called "Hints" in the top navigation and "Record Hints" on the summary panel on the home page, and the word "task" is not found anywhere.

Hello, indeed I meant the ones on the home page - when I set the language to English, theu are called "Record Hints"? Normally I work in French ("Suggestions de documents") or Nederlands (Dutch) ("Document Hints").

I realise now I can see if there are hints for others e.g. with the color in the fan chart, so that will be the way to find them in the future.

    thanks a lot!
