Question: Which of the "Relationship" TOOLS are you referring to?
There are two (x2) that I know of ...
"View My Relationship" ... to the individual/person one is working on.
I just double checked ...
It shows my relationship through, both, "Maternal"; and, "Paternal', lines ...
Plus, I even checked with my Wife's Grandparents - it worked just fine
[ ie. Wife's Grandmother/Father - on, both, "Maternal"; and, "Paternal', lines ]
Seems to be working just fine.
"Enable Relationship Viewing" ... between Yourself; &, ANOTHER User/Patron
That I have not tested ...
That said ...
Here is a "Knowledge Article" in 'FamilySearch':
How do I view my relationship to a person in Family Tree?
Although, not specifically indicated, there is no mention that such only looks at one specific line (eg. either, "Maternal"; or, "Paternal").
My reading is that it explores, both, "Maternal"; or, "Paternal", lines.
As, I indicated, I have not tested such; so, I could be wrong ...
Just my thoughts.
Just depends who you are linking to.
also note the viewer will only show the first relationship it finds.
you could ask similar questions about various charts and forms
to a certain extent we trust it is working unless we have proof it is not.
I have no reason to believe it is not checking both sides of the parentage.
if you have a specific reason you think it is not working let us know that specific reason.
I have a couple that is shown twice on one grandfather and once on my other grandfather and one grandmother. It will not allow me to see 'view my relationship' between these people. It defaults to just one person. I have spent a great deal of time working on this issue and have spoken to LDS twice with no solution. Ideas?
You can see your relationship to a person in Family Tree. Your relationship displays on a chart that shows the direct relatives between you and the person. At the top of the chart, you can see your relationship.
By design, the relationship chart shows only the shortest path to the relative.
The chart can show up to 15 generations up and 15 generations down from the person.
You cannot see the relationship between two individuals in the chart, such as your grandfathers, only your relationship to one or the other.
Does that help?
No. I wanted to show the multiple paths from me to a couple 6th generatiions back. Three different relationships.
Ronald, as Sanra said, the "show my relationship" feature on FamilySearch is designed to only show one path, the shortest one. There is nothing you can do or that anyone can tell you that will change this.
There is a service from BYU called Relative Finder which may be able to show you more. (I have not had good luck with it, but Brett swears by it.)
