Question about singular names
In the batch M32J-39P in the United States Muster Rolls and Rosters project, there are many singular names listed, for example, the entries 9-13 in the Privates list. In the project directions the instructions are to list a name in the given names field if you cannot determine if a name is a given name or a surname. My guess is that in each entry with only one name entered, the name entered would be a surname, though no written indication is given.
Is there any information to the contrary regarding singular names? Thank you in advance for any assistance.
You should follow the Field Help instructions: "If you cannot determine if a name is a given name or a surname, type it in the Given Names field." This roster is from Camp John Hay in the Philippine Islands, and it looks like those with singular names are likely native Filipinos or of Filipino descent.0

Here you would definitely follow the rule in the General Indexing Guidelines in the Project Instructions and let the researchers draw their own conclusions about the single names.
