When searching records, the 'Show Exact Search' function automatically enables itself.

Is there a way to make the 'Show Exact Search' toggle to remain in the off position until the user requests it to be on?

It might be remembering the setting you last searched under - or the default may have changed. I went to Search> Records> MORE OPTIONS and it was enabled. So I toggled it off, closed the tab and then went back and it was still off. This seems to indicate the setting is being held from what you last searched.

No... if I turn it off before hitting search it straight away turns back on again without me clicking on anything. Don't get me wrong... it is WAY BETTER than the old search that used to time-out and promptly disregard any new search parameters I had painstakingly typed in - that is now fixed (Yay!!!!) these are just niggly little issues that make using the interface a pain.

    I would try clearing browser cache/cookies: https://www.familysearch.org/cookies

Log out then log back in and see if that does anything.

Ok will do... I think the number of times cookies are the issue we need the browsers to put a 'clear cookies' button on the main title bar. Thankyou very much for your help and patience.

You can set your browser cookies setting to clear familysearch cookies on window shutdown (at least in Chrome chrome://settings/cookies

and I think that's pretty standard). I hope that works - keep fingers crossed ...

It's not the way I see EXACT SEARCH option working for me - maybe the server you are connecting to has other default settings (wouldn't know why). Where are you connecting from (I'm connecting in Utah - so not fair since I'm so close to FamilySearch main servers I guess)?

    @ChristopherTemple-Watts

I, too, have noticed the "Show Exact Search" indicator now seems permanently set to "On". Personally, I find this an improvement, as users can clearly see they do have an option to make "Exact" searches on any or all fields. So nothing works any differently if they don't check those boxes: the feature just acts as a reminder that searches can be narrowed down (say to search on an exact name spelling), if the user should so wish.

It's a bug... please don't insult everyones intelligence by trying to pass it off as a feature. Obviously I won't be taken seriously here. Have a nice day.

Unless the user icon/avatar has MOD or Community Manager - or identifies as a FamilySearch representative - we are just other FamilySearch users trying to help. Sorry to have not been able to resolve your concern.

As I mentioned above - this is not the behavior I am seeing; however, if I choose 'exact search' it holds that setting until I disable it (so somewhat similar to what you see). Using Reset in More Options does not reset the Exact Search option. Since that is not what you say you are seeing I can only assume you are connecting to a different server that has different default setting options than the one I am connecting to? I wouldn't know why familysearch server might be serving different settings - they should all function the same for the version of distribution that is current.

The exact checkboxes were always visible ("turned on" or "enabled") in the old, much-missed interface, so having them default to available is a step back in the correct direction. Now they just need to get rid of the switch, and label the checkboxes instead. (That was the one major fault of the old interface: the checkboxes were unlabeled, and hence -- unsurprisingly -- got misused.)

I like the new interface very much... I just find the auto-pop-up place dialog box to be a complete waste of space for people searching for BMD records. I also like how uncluttered the interface looks when the "exact search" is turned off. I very rarely need to use it so turning it off is very nice... except that it turn on again on the very next search without me clicking the checkbox. It's ok... I put up with it... I just think there is precious little space on the right-hand-side-search section that reducing the need for scrolling up and down by any way possible would be very helpful whilst maintaining a clutter-free interface. All good. Thankyou for answering the question. Cheerio.

    Christopher

    I am just another 'lowly' User/Patron ...

    Just in passing ...

    Wow ...

I believe, that you might be one, of the very few, who likes the, "New" Format of, and, "Changes" to, the NEW "Search Records"; and, the resulting "Results" page/screen ...

[ And, that is even, with the more recent 'tweaks' ... ]

MANY; Many; many, of us DO NOT ...

    [ I absolutely 'detest' it ... ]

    Just my thoughts.
