Search results problem - observations on Ohio death cert. collection
I seems to get certain search results that I need to already know absolutely everything, like to get a Find A Grave result, and even that does not always work. I find it at Ancestry. But more concerning is the inability to get a return on the collection Ohio Deaths, 1908-1953. Example: I searched for records with "Paul E Hedding, death Morrow, Ohio, United States, 1951." I do get a data only result against the collection "Ohio, County Death Records, 1840-2001" but not against "Ohio Death, 1908-1953," which provides me with the image. Even after adding all the birth and death information from the county death data, I still do not get a search result against the collection "Ohio Death, 1908-1953." This is not an isolated case. This has been occurring on all Ohio deaths I have been searching. I know how to use the waypoints, and understand the organization of the collection, so I can drill into the collection and find the death certificates, so I know they are there. The problem is something is terribly wrong with the search algorithm on "Ohio Death, 1908-1953" specifically, and other collections is general. (Paul E Hedding was not in the tree. I added him.)

I've looked into this more. Someone at FS needs to look into the index data on the collection Ohio Death, 1908-1953. Around 1944 going forward, there a many images that do not have index data. Is the set corrupted? Select any of those DGS and run through the images. You will see many do not have index data, and I'm not speaking of duplicate images. I guess I use the collection enough that I have noticed.

I think there may be access restrictions for non-LDS muddying the waters?
I found the index entry (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F6C3-XQC); it says I need to go to an FHC or affiliate library to see the image. So then I dug up the image by browsing (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-6SZS-3PN?i=1417), and it has the "Attach" button grayed out as if it has an index entry associated with it, but the Index Information tab is empty.
Uh, murkier and murkier: the browsable image is number 1418 on film 4109377, whereas the FHC-only image is said to be number 1562 on film 4030311. Were these filmed twice, with one filming (nonsensically) restricted?

Hi Julia -
I believe the restrictions that apply to Family History Centers apply equally to members. Members of the church cannot access more records (at home) than people who are not members. Members need to go to the Family History Centers to get access to FHC restricted records too. And everyone is welcome to go to the FHC (you don't have to me a member of the church to go).

The are zero restrictions on collection Ohio Death, 1908-1953. You are right that there are restrictions on collection Ohio, County Death Records, 1840-2001. I have found that somehow index data has been lost on random images of the unrestricted collection, particularly in the late 40s and 50s.

@JeffLuke, there are restrictions that depend on the type of account you're signed in with. LDS accounts can access things from home that a non-LDS account gets the FHC message on, and neither will know the difference unless they compare directly. There are also restrictions that are the same for either type of account, but again, a lone non-LDS user like me cannot tell which is the case based on just the message.
(I am approximately equidistant from three different FHCs, each about an hour away, none of them with hours that work for someone with a child in school and unable to drive in the dark. Or that was the case pre-plague, anyway. The hours have doubtless been reduced further in the last year and a half, so "FHC only", for me, is functionally equivalent to "no". I look on the bright side: there is a metric boatload of unrestricted stuff on FS, and I've made good use of some of it.)

Hi Julia - thanks for that info. I thought all accounts outside of the FHC were the same. My apologies.
I am lucky to have 3 FHC, each about 30 min from me, but I have a similar problem with available hours and my work schedule, so I am not able to go there very often.
