Indexing multiple deceased in same obituary
I am reviewing Oklahoma obituaries and have one that has two grandparents and grandchild who all died in an accident all listed in the same obituary. I can't see any instructions for how to index this. I have seen instructions in the past but it was a long time ago and I can't remember specifics. Can someone direct me to those instructions?
I think I remember that you do all the entries for the first deceased with all related people first; then move to the next deceased and their related people, then the next .... Can someone verify this for me?

The instruction @genthusiast is referring to is from the “What to Remember” section of the Project Instructions:
- Do not create additional deceased records for deceased relatives. Only the deceased for whom the obituary was written should be indexed using the Deceased entry type. All other relatives, surviving or deceased, should be indexed using the Other entry type. An exception to this would be if an obituary was about multiple individuals who had died. In this case, index the first deceased person and all their relatives, then the next deceased person and all their relatives and so on.

Maybe this pdf will help?
You are correct - It says to index each deceased separately and input other relations on each one.
I hope this helps.

Thank you. But this doesn't specifically address multiple deceased in the same obituary. Or am I missing something?

It's at the bottom of the first page - there are two record types - deceased and other. So yes you index one deceased at a time with all others attached. So you were right in remembering how to do it.

In the past: For multiple individuals, we indexed the First Deceased and all their relatives. Then we indexed the second deceased and all their relatives but never repeated a name.
For instance:
A one-car accident occurred last evening on I-77. Jane Doe was pronounced dead at the scene and her daughter, Jean Doe, later died at the hospital. Jane's husband, John Doe, and their other two children Dick and Janet, were not injured. Jane was the daughter of Jim & Eleanor Sharp of Moundsville. Jean was engaged to Jack Sprout. Her paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Doe, also of Moundsville.
Deceased: Given Name: Jane Surname: Doe
Other: Given Name: John Surname: Doe Relationship: Husband
Other: Given Name: Dick Surname: <blank> Relationship: Child
Other: Given Name: Janet Surname: <blank> Relationship: Child
Other: Given Name: Jim Surname: Sharp Relationship: Parent
Other: Given Name: Eleanor Surname: Sharp Relationship: Parent
Deceased: Given Name: Jean Surname: Doe
Other: Given Name: Jack Surname: Sprout Relationship: Fiancé
Other: Prefix: Mr Given Name: Alexander Surname: Doe Relationship: Grandfather
Other: Prefix: Mrs Given Name: Alexander Surname: Doe Relationship: Grandmother
In other words, we did not list Jean as the daughter of Jane, nor did we index all of their combined relationships for Jean, like her mother, father, siblings, or maternal grandparents,

Maybe the moderators can find out how we are supposed to do these now. Many of the links to the old obituary indexing instructions have been broken. They suggested on some of these new project instructions that there was a link to the way we index multiple deceased in the same obit. There was never a link provided.
Of course they are going to need to see the batch to get an answer. So, @judyannehenry1 you should share your batch using the batch code or the link and then hold onto it until they have an answer. (Although it does seem that moderators are now able to view submitted batches).

Hi, Melissa. I searched high and low to try and find that old "multiple deceased" guidance (i.e., don't repeat a name) and couldn't find it on my computer or elsewhere. A new broom sweeps clean, I guess.

Melissa S Himes Thank you for your answers. I hadn't shared the batch because it was a general question rather than a specific instance. I had also tried to find the link that was referred to in some instructions, but couldn't and wondered where it was. Your suggestions are in line with what I remembered from a while back but I did want it clarified. I'm comfortable with how you suggested and how I had remembered and reviewed the batch.
But it would be good to have those instructions still available for those who have not read them before to avoid double (or multiple) indexing the same names for multiple deceased persons.
