Not sure how to index this. 1 person or 3 people?
Without the batch ID we can not look at the batch to be sure what you are indexing.
However, I would say this is 2 names - Phillips Wm W would be the father. Phillips Wm W Jr is the son, both living in the same household. The (Phillips & Brennan) looks to be a business name.
Please look carefully at the Project Instruction and examine the document examples. You can usually find the answers there.
You are welcome to reply with the batch number if you still have questions. If you click on Batch in the top left corner of the screen, then click About Batch, you will find the batch number.
Hope this helps.
This is typical of City Directories. We only index unique names and business names as outlined in the project instructions. Since there is no suffix fields for the Jr, Sr, etc. we create one entry for
Given Name: Wm W
and another entry for
Some people create another entry with just Phillips as the Surname to cover the business name. It seems a bit odd to me since it is simply a record with no given name and a duplicated surname of Phillips. If the goal is to get people to the image and they can see all the Phillips on the page, they will see the business with or without the creation of that duplicated business surname.
There are three entries. One the name with both surname and given name and one each for the surnames in the business name. The instruction for this is in the Project Instructions, What to Remember in this Project, bullet points 3 and 4 if my memory serves since a batch number was not included in this question. Each of these four names is unique unless you have indexed them previously, including the two surnames in the business name. If you provide a Shared batch code I can copy those instructions for you here.
We do not index the Philip, jr because we do not index suffixes in this project so it would not be a unique name.
We do not index the name - Phillips Wm W Jr
The field help for Given Names tells up: "Do not include titles, terms, or suffixes with the name. Index prefixes in the Prefix field. "
There is no suffix field or Titles and Terms Field on this project.
The Indexing Guidelines for How do I Index Name Titles or Terms:
Titles and terms can be a bit confusing to run into while indexing. Some examples of these instances include:
The general rule is to not type them into the Given Name or in the Surname fields. Type the title or term in the Titles and Terms field for that record.
We also do not index Duplicated names. "Index each unique name. Some names may be duplicated. When names are exact duplicates, index only the first instance of the name listed. Skip the other exact duplicates and then index the next unique name. Unique names include names with different middle initials, spouses listed with the individual, and different name spellings. Do not index names in full-page advertisements."
Since Phillips is an exact duplicate of a Surname of an already listed name, I don't think it needs to be listed. But, the program will also not delete it since the record will not have a given name attached. Since the instruction isn't crystal clear, that's fully up to the indexer or reviewer, IMHO.
You are correct, Melissa. We do not index the suffixes so that name would be the same as the same name without the Jr so was not unique. Will edit my previous answer.
