We used to be able to see records on this site without having to go to a Center. Why is it that now everything I would like to see I'm told I can't do it on line? It's very disheartening. I used to find tons of info but now if I think I have something I can't look at it.

We are so sorry that you cannot access some records that you are interested in. We have many more records that are online than ever before.

Access restrictions usually come from the organization who owns or manages the historical records. These restrictions determine where and how FamilySearch can make the records available. We do our best to support these agreements so that we can maintain the trust of those we partner with and continue to work with them on future projects.

Please use the Research Wiki to see where the records are available, there may be other websites if the records are not available for public views on FamilySearch.

Hope you will be able to see the records you are after, if you like you can request a lookup for the records you are interested in during this "covid" times.

    PMuncey,

You asked the question about viewing records. As mentioned previously there are more records to search than ever before.

We have quests mentioned that changing browsers to use the ' Search feature ' is very helpful.

This is the knowledge article that makes these suggestions.

    https://www.familysearch.org/help/helpcenter/article/which-internet-browsers-are-compatible

You may not be familiar with the Help center.

At the top of any page on FamilySearch.org, click the Help icon (the small circle with the question mark inside of it).

    1. A drop-down menu appears. Click the option that you think is most relevant.
    • Getting Started teaches you basic concepts for using the website and provides you with information in case you'd like to talk to someone in person about any questions you may have.
    • Help Center brings you to the Help Center home page, where you can search all resources or browse by topic.
    • Contact Us offers a variety of ways to reach FamilySearch Support.
    • Community brings you to a place where you can collaborate with others who have similar interests in the challenging but rewarding work of genealogy. You can browse or ask or answer questions. You can also find and join groups on specific subjects.
    • Research Wiki allows you to search through the compiled resources of the FamilySearch Research Wiki.
    • Helper Resources links you to the Planner and other resources that you can use to help others with their family history.
    • How do I change my username and password?

Thank you for the work you are doing in Family Tree and we wish you much success.

The Catalog displays different access icons depending on one's logged-in status. Make sure you're logged in and then look again; some of those locked records may now be showing a camera icon.

It is particularly disappointing to find the links in your Sources sections are no longer active, or do not work (say) after you arrive home from your local Family History Center.

As explained, these problems usually relate to a change or review of contracts held with either the record custodians, or one of the major commercial websites, with which FamilySearch "shares" records.

I recently took out a short-term subscription to one of the "big three" and, for a modest sum, was about to download a large amount of material not available / no longer available on the FamilySearch website.

A tip for the future is to always download records to your hard drive - that way you will still have a copy to view, even if the images do disappear from the FS site.
