In the city directories batches, there are names that are supposed to be indexed with a lot of non-indexable information beside them. However, some of that information can include names. Should I index those names?

For example, it states:

"Sorensen Frederick D, bkkpr Gordon & Co, res Hotel Barker"

I've indexed Frederick D. Sorensen, but would I need to index an individual in a separate field with the last name "Gordon"?

We do index the names of employers in the city directory projects. So Gordon would be indexed as a surname. The Hotel Barker is a little more difficult. If there is an address and you can search to find out if the Hotel was owned by the Barker family, then Barker should be indexed. If the entry was res: Mamie Smith's Boarding House, then Mamie Smith is indexed.

    From the Project Instructions:

"Index names of employers and employees. When indexing business names, index the names of individuals only. For example, "The Ad Book" would not be indexed, but "Barner Kehlenbeck Wines and Liquors" should be indexed. In this case, you would create 2 entries: one for Barner (surname) and another for Kehlenbeck (surname)."

Thank you for your question. When indexing City Direcories, only index the given names of the individual not the business name. The Project Instructions are very helpful with these questions.
