I am reviewing Virginia Marriages. In the spaces for entering parents, it says on the batch I just uploaded, as an example: Joe Holloman and Annie, his wife. The person who indexed put in Holloman as the wife's surname. This example is continued throughout the whole record. Before I put blank in all of the wives surnames (whom you would assume match that of their husband) I want to know if this is right. In following the instructions "don't assume" I would put 'blank.' But when it says 'wife' you would think the same surname would apply.

We looked into the image, the field help and into the project instructions:

The Field Help for Wife's Parent 1 Surname, paragraph 5, says to not assume a surname from the surnames of others mentioned in the document. We would be assuming the surname for Annie, so the field for Wife's Parent 1 Surname should be marked blank. The Project Instructions report that the completed index will be freely accessible online to the general public when the collection is published. A researcher will see this image and can make their inferences.

    Hope this answers your question.
