Why does Charles August Osborne not appear in a census?
My Great Grandfather Charles August Osborne was born circa 1864 Liverpool, Lanchashire, England. His father was Peter Osborne (Artist) and mother Christina maiden name unknown. He is reputed to have had at least one sister. No such family appears in any English census so I have hit a brick wall. Where can I look now?
NOTE: The above information derives from his marriage and death certificates in Victoria, Australia. Both certs contain the same information.

I'm not sure if this might be of help to you but I've just done a search on ancestry.com, FamilySearch and FindMyPast for your great grandfather to see if I could find a census and have only found this information:
Charles August Osborne b 1864 Liverpool England; d 22 June 1903 South Yarra, Victoria, Australia
Married Christina Alice Peters (1865-1938) 25 May 1891 Stawell, Victoria, Australia
Father: Peter Osbourne
Children: Gertrude (1892-1974); Charles George (1894-1915 died in the war); Reginald (1896-1963); Christina Florence (1897-1979); Earnest Alexander (1899-1971); George Alfred (1901-1968 of his wounds 20 August); Jack (1903-1905)
Charles August is on the 1903 Electoral Roll as Chas August Osborne with is wife Christina in South Yarra
Having searched all the 1871 census with the information you have given it could be that Charles had only sailed from Liverpool and perhaps had a different name. I have searched the UK General Records Office database for Charles' birth and cannot find anyone born in Liverpool for that date and 2years either side. Not helpful I know but I hope what I have given will assist you.
If you can find a date or place of birth for his father Peter Osbourne/Osborne you might find the family, I've done a search for a Peter marrying a Christina as well but cannot find anything. You probably have all the above information. Sorry I have tried to help and searched through all the sites I can access.

Thankyou Caroline for your diligence in looking up my Great Grandfather. Yes I have all the information that you found and most probably originated from me and other relations have posted it. Like you I also could not find a birth even for 10 yrs either side. My grandfather was Reginald Osborne whom you listed.
I have been thinking for a while of a name change but don't know any reason why he would do this. He appears to have provided the info on his marriage cert himself so don't know why he would say his father was an artist if it wasn't true. Can't locate any Peter Osborne that matches up in any way. The brick wall remains.
Thankyou once again for your time.
Kind Regards
Rod Donelly
