My great grandmother was born in Panama

and baptized as Clementina Quintero, San Jose de David Panama, Daughter of Lucila Quintero, on 29 dic. 1856 (29 Dec 1856) San José, David, Chiriquí, Panama

I dont know why in many records the parents dont show even when they were married. They wrote "natural daughter".

The thing is I can not find information of Lucila Quintero, but I know she was from Chiriqui, but finding where from in Scotland is Dr. Robert MacDowall seems harder to find.

Any suggestions?

"Natural daughter" generally means the parents were not married. If you know they were married, perhaps they were married in a Protestant or civil ceremony which was not recognised by the Roman Catholic Church.

To see if the marriage was registered with the British Consul, you could check the Findmypast (pay website)  British Armed Forces and Overseas Banns and Marriages to see if there is a marriage index record. Ancestry includes the database UK, Registers of Births, Marriages and Deaths From British Consulates, 1810-1968 consisting of various Foreign Office records. This database includes images and consists of a selection of specified Consular returns, not all Consular Returns.

Was  Dr. Robert MacDowall a medical doctor? If so, perhaps there may be something in the Ancestry (pay website) "UK Medical Registers, 1859-1959". "This database contains annually published books listing all of the names of [UK] doctors who were licensed to practise in the United Kingdom and abroad from 1859-1959. Also included are foreign doctors who qualified in Britain. Although these books were published annually, registers have only been digitised on 4 year intervals".

There is also "UK & Ireland, Medical Directories, 1845-1942"  “Medical Directories list most practising and retired doctors in Britain and its colonies”. Includes The Medical Directory for Scotland (1852-1860).

For Scotland research generally, there is the pay website ScotlandsPeople.

You could also look at online newspapers from Scotland. There is a collection on the pay website Findmypast, although you would need to look at the dates covered.

    Thank you so much!!!

I know they were married because in other documents it reads legally married, but I only care for the fact that my great grandmother being Clementina Quintero in her baptism, Clementina Mac Dowall in the other papers, married to Salcedo... I have no idea how to find her death certificate. I know she lived at least to around 1910...

Also the way documents were written, and pictures taken in the site...when the books were not well opened the pictures were taken and last name would read "Ma" instead of Mac Dowall because the book was not completely open.

    Thanks again

    ML

If you think there is a possibility that the marriage took place at a later date, it might also be worthwhile checking the site ScotlandsPeople (free to search but pay to view) https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/guides/statutory-register-marriages

    • Includes Register of births, deaths and marriages in foreign counties (1860-1965) - includes marriages of Scots with entries made on the basis of information supplied by the parties concerned and after consideration of the evidence of each event

Thank you so much, I guess Dr. Robert Mac Dowall was born after 1800, but information is only from 1855 when he already lived in Panama.

Maybe I need is to find how to get records of Panama

    Thank a lot anyway

    Maria

Hi, recently I found his obituary in British newspapers

July 1879 : At Panama, central America, Robert Mac Dowall, a graduate of Glasgow, who took part in one of the expeditions in search of Sir John Franklin. He was a native of Fifeshire and had reached his 67th year.

This means he must had been born on 1812... but there are other Robert Mac Dowalls... but I can not find him and his ancestors.
