Standardized Birthplaces

Can someone please help me to understand the requirement for "Standardized Birthplaces" or place names etc. The reason I'm asking is because our family research has confirmed the birth place of a loved one, and then FamilySearch comes up with a red flag to say that it's not a standardized birth place, and they provide us with a record hint of a standardized place, but yet it's outside of where our family member was born. Just trying to understand why the "actual" birthplace isn't acceptable.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

    G'Day

    I am just another 'lowly' User/Patron ...

I know how I would like to answer/respond to you 'Question'.

    But, before I do ...

Question: What is the "Place Name" for the "Birth" of the loved one; as, you know it?

I can then use that "Place Name"; as, you know it, as an example, in my answer/response.

    Please advise.

Hi Brett, so my maternal grandmother was born in SAPO'E FALEALILI in the Pacific Island of Samoa. But obviously it's not a "standardized birthplace" as seen in the snippet below showing "data problems," suggesting a record hint of "Falefa" (obviously a standardized place) which is a village outside of where my grandma was born.

I'm just wondering whether it's a geographical thing or a recording matter?!! Looking forward to your insight.

I will return an give a proper explanation ...

    But ...

    Just quickly ...

I just 'looked' at, Sapo'e Falealili, Samoa, as a "Place" ...

    image.png

Suffice to 'say', that at this present juncture in time, I would simply use that "Sapo'e, Samoa"; as, the "Standarised" Place Name; and, retain Sapo'e Falealili, Samoa as the actual "Place Name" on record (ie. as entered/input).

    Like such ...

    image.png

    FYI

"Sapo'e, Samoa"; being, the "Locality"; and, that

"Falealili, Samoa"; being, the LARGER Area (ie. Division), which most likely, includes that SAMLLER "Locality

The "Place Names" Database in 'FamilySearch', is an ongoing, 'work in progress'.

I hope this helps, somewhat, just to get things started; and, recorded.

    Brett

Hey Brett, your suggestion worked to resolve the "data problems" issue. I'm starting to get a feel of how to navigate my way around these glitches with record information. Really appreciate your help and your prompt response to my question. THANK YOU
