What does the abbreviation, "ano" following the name of the grantor stand for?

That is a great question! We have put our heads together here and we are not sure exactly what it means. Some think it might be a Latin abbreviation. Some think it might mean "and another." Whatever it means, we do not need to index it. The researcher who finds the page will have to decipher it for themselves.

I don't think ano is a word in English, but, it is a Portuguese word that translates to year in English. On these land transactions, it appears that "& ano" was used to mean "and another".
