How would you index a birthplace that says Poland (formally Russia). Sometimes it is in parenthesis and sometimes not. Thank you

I would type the birthplace as Poland Russia and leave out the identifier "formerly" and the parentheses. The general indexing guidelines tell us:

Do not include identifying descriptions or terms, such as “near,” “about,” “around,” “twp,” “township,” “city,” “county,” or “state,” with the place-name unless the term is normally used as part of the name (for example, Mexico City, Salt Lake City, or New York City).

    Hello,

We type what is in the record, we do not interpret. The person who works with the record can fill in what he/she thinks is correct.

    Greetings

We have been told to do exactly as Melissa S Himes has suggested. Include all the locations minus the 'formerly'.
