Reviewing. Question on whether to annotate surnames for mothers in the above cited batch. Examine Item 1 as a typical example. Project helps indicate to me that Jane, the child, should bear Father's surname, 'Wood.' The Father, Walter, must likewise have his surname, "Wood,' annotated. Instructions and images seem nebulous as to whether the mother, Eleanor, should show any surname. Please advise. Thx

The Field Helps are more useful than the illustrated examples since they are of a different style record.

For the mother's surname: If only 1 surname was recorded for both parents, type the parents' surname in this field. If a surname was recorded for the child but not for the parents, index the child’s surname in this field. This is an exception to the General Indexing Guidelines.

For the child's surname: If a surname was not recorded for a child and only 1 surname was recorded for both parents, type the parents' surname in this field. If 2 different surnames were recorded for the parents, type the father's surname in this field. This is an exception to the General Indexing Guidelines.

Following these directions I'd index Wood for the child and both parents on line 1.

Thank you for this question. Based on the Project instructions under What to Index we looked at How to Index a Baptism Register. In that example id indicates to put the last name for the child, the father and the mother. So in your batch you would want to index Wood for the last name of Jane, Walter and Eleanor.

We hope this has answered your question. Thank you for helping in the reviewing process.
