Dear Margaret,
Welcome to the FamilySearch community. Thank you for the time you spend asking questions
Patrons add a living Family member one at the time. FamilySearch is extremely careful in protecting the privacy of Living Family Members.
Family Tree allows you to build out and populate your family tree in a variety of different ways that you will quickly become more familiar with as you work to fill in information about your family. In the meantime, start with who you know, such as a spouse, parents, or grandparents. Depending on individual circumstances, it may be helpful to contact close relatives for any missing details you may come across.
The more generations you add, the easier it will be for Family Tree to link you to matching ancestors that may already exist in the system or to provide you with record hints for those yet to be added.
Since FamilySearch is a public, highly collaborative genealogical site, know that the records for living people are stored in your private space and that not all of their information will be searchable or viewable to other users.
Here are some basic pointers to get you started. For more in-depth instructions on how to add people to your tree, or for more information about our privacy policy, see the articles linked below.
Steps (website)
You can view Family Tree in a few different ways, meaning there are a few different ways to add in family members.
Landscape View
- Use the arrows to expand the tree to the end of a line.
- Click the appropriate link for the person you want to add:
- To add a parent or spouse, click Add Parent or Add Spouse.
- To add a child, click Children below a couple box, and then click Add Child.
Portrait View
- Use the arrows to find the end of a line.
- Click Add Parent to add a parent.
- To add a child, use the landscape or descendancy views. The portrait view does not show the children of the pedigree couples.

Thanks for this information. I was however wondering how to keep track of living people OUTSIDE of Family Search. I was hoping for others on this platform who have opinions to share those.

Dear Margaret,
Thank you for that question regarding ' how to keep track of Living Relatives outside FamilySearch'.
Most patrons use a third party program like Roots Magic, however we do not know if you are already using that software program. There are many other programs out there that accomplish the same tasks. We mentioned Roots Magic as you mentioned that in your original question. Ancestry is not a free website, or My Heritage all have a yearly fee to use their program.
Thank you for the work you are doing in Family Tree and we wish you much success.
