Question about determining sex of individual by given name: Contradictory information:
In the Norway probate card project (I'm currently working on: Norge—Tinglysningskort, 1640–1903 [Del C][MMHT-QDL]), the project instructions indicate one thing and the field help says the opposite: Project instructions say, "If you can identify the sex based on the given name or other information in the record, do so. (Note that this instruction is an exception to the basic indexing guidelines and most other indexing projects.)." But the field help for sex says, "Indicate the sex only if it was specifically recorded or you can tell what it was from relationship terms, such as "sønn" or "datter," or other evidence in the language. Do not assume the sex of a person based on given names." Which is correct?
